Sleep apnea

Hey guys,

I have been dealing with sleep apnea/snoring/stop breathing for a few seconds for several months now. It's negatively impacted my sleep quality. I work shift work, and I have noticed how much more fatigued and exhausted I am. My snoring also causes disruptions for other people sleeping with me.

Before using testosterone/steroids I did not have this issue.

I have an overnight sleep study I'm participating in coming up soon.

Just wondering if anyone had advice on other things I could try to help resolve my issue? I know they will offer treatment options possibly at the conclusion of my sleep study. But I definitely wanted to try other methods a doctor may not recommend....or that you guys have found success with?

Recommendations for blood work to be completed to check certain blood markers? I have read that elevated RBC may contribute to my issue? I will complete blood work asap and speak to a doctor.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am going to work on losing some weight, as I'm sure the extra weight gain from steroids doesn't help. I will probably also lower my test dose to a lower/TRT dose.

Thanks guys. Will be very helpful any information you guys can provide that was effective for you!

Apnea is proportional to increased neck circumference and weight.

Losing weight is the best "conservative" option.
Thank you kindly for the feedback. It's really impacting my life, so any help I can get is greatly appreciated.

I'll work on losing body fat (water to go along with it) through diet and cardio.

I'm also going to essentially go to a low dose test/TRT.

I've recently had this same problem. You know, you can lose weight and get to a low bodyfat %, but obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) doesn't care if the excess weight is due to fat or muscle, so it's possible to be lean and still have OSA.

The issue isn't just a lack of quality sleep. This can cause real health problems for people down the road, especially heart problems (which is doubly worse for us steroid users).

If you want to continue to get bigger, a CPAP is the best thing to do.

I went through two sleep studies recently. The first was to determine if I do indeed have OSA (and how severe it was). The second, once the OSA was confirmed, was to determine the ideal settings for the CPAP.

Goodluck mate.

I’ve used a cpap for years, and it’s truly life changing. No matter what, depending on the severity, even if you lose weight you will likely need a Cpap. I recommend you use it, as sleep apnea is very hard on your heart, as well as your entire body in general. I’d also ask your doctor for a prescription for Provigil (Modafinil) for daytime sleepiness due to sleep apnea. You’ll have no problem getting it if you have a diagnosis of sleep apnea. Between that, and using cpap, your life will change drastically for the better.

you find that you need modafinil even though you now have a cpap? I thought the cpap solved all problems

Most days I don't need it. I'm prescribed 300mg per day, so I'm supposed to take a full tab in the morning, then half a tab at noon. Not sure if you've used Modafinil before, but it's fantastic, and great to use whether you're sleepy or not just because of the added focus and alertness it gives.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I am awaiting the results of my sleep study, they said a doctor will reach out to me sometime in the next few weeks to let me know.

I will post their recommendation they give me in here.

I will definitely be using the CPAP machine if I'm prescribed it.

It won't hurt for me to lose some fat/water weight, so I will work away on that also in the meantime.

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea in 2017 (64 events/hour) and have used a CPAP ever since. It takes a while to adjust to, but it's well worth it if needed. I have big traps and a thick neck (not like George Corpsegrinder Fisher, but still abnormally large) which helps with combat sports, but is not conducive to proper breathing mechanics. Make sure not to directly train your neck, unless you have to.

A problem that hasn't been mentioned in this thread is that sleep apnea increases hematocrit, as do steroids. Make sure to keep an eye on this through regular bloodwork.

As mentioned, modafinil is wonderful for brain fog, but can jack up blood pressure in some people, which is especially an issue when on gear. Look into getting some telmisartan and/or nebivolol if this happens.

Why not get double jaw surgery to open up your airways? I had it done (albeit for cosmetic reasons)

Yes, cpap helps a lot, issue for me was that getting used to cpap, sleep apnea seems to have gotten worse, if I fall asleep for a nap somewhere, I ll choke almost immediately and wake up.
Need to go to the cpap shop soon btw, buy a full face mask in case I get a bad sinusitis or need nose surgery after breaking it again ( just broke it sparring but no issue)
Using the pillows as a mask btw, it s quite small and doesn t put any pressure on the nose ridge.
Second what other(s) have said, lean muscle also provokes sleep apnea

The thought of being free from the CPAP is very appealing. I would really like to be able to take a nap on my couch. I've looked into the surgery, but the success rate is not where I would like for it to be. Eventually I might take the chance, but for now, it's not worth it to me.

A naturopath path also recommended
Adrenplus-300™Douglas Labs to me to help with my energy levels throughout the day while I deal with my sleep apnea.

I have never tried this supplement before. I may just order the individual ingredients separately on Amazon etc to save $.

I'll post any feedback on here if I try the supplement or even just some of the individual ingredients on their own!

Just wanted to share this if it helps anyone. :)

Doctor stated from the sleep study that I have mild sleep apnea (stop breathing more than normal, but it is mild).

He is going to prescribe me the CPAP machine. He told me to start with that and to do another sleep study after, and if it does not improve he recommended the oral mouth guard. But he said the oral mouth guard is expensive and not always effective.

I'll post feedback here once I start using the CPAP machine.

Anyone here that has sleep apnea find it improves/possibly goes away when they drop down to a TRT dose for an extended period and lose a lot of the bloating/swelling etc?

Are you taking Cialis/Viagra? I notice on the nights when I'm getting dirty with a chick, my sleep apnea is twice as bad as usual.

I use a snoring mouthpiece that pushes my jaw forward and opens up my airway. It really helps.

I to started having sleep apnea. Started shortly after trt. Now that I look back. But I think I was destined to be on it any ways. My dads has central sleep apnea. I’m 5 8 189 22ish body fat. Cat say that it got worse as I upped by test dose or not. I take cialis 2.5 daily. But had a chronic stuffy nose before it. The main thing that effects it is alcohol. The more I drink the more tired I am the next day.

2.5? That's it? Shit, I take 20 to 60 mg a day, plus 100 mg Viagra (sometimes 400). It destroys my breathing haha.
