smoking...

i live in washington state and our local government is having a problem with cash, like many cities. their were some issues about city employees who smoke. people who smoke, on average, take more sick days, which tax payers pay for. they also spend more time at the dr's orifice, which tax payers pay for. are less productive due to their taking more breaks, on average, than a person who does not smoke. also, they are hospitalized with serious illness more than a non-smoker is.

so, with all the controversy and other cities in the state doing the same, my city will no longer hire people who are smokers.

cant say i blame them. i dont hate those who smoke. i used to smoke, but why should i pay for the insurance rates of a smoker? why should i pay for their extra days off needed to visit the dr. or because they are sick more often?

anyone else live in a city where they have done this? so far it's a pretty big issue here and people are trying to fight it.

No, but my city has required pretty much every restaurant and bar to ban smoking. There are still certain places that are exempt, but not many.

Personally, I hate cigarette smoke, but if someone wants to smoke that is there choice. Just seat me in non-smoking and I'm fine.

LMMFAO! No smoking in bars, ahahahahahaha! That one really cracks me up. It's alright to imbibe poison(literally), but you can't smoke while doing so. LOL That's funny.

Lets just say we have a city manager of "color" who is trying to make a name for herself.

She came in and revoked the liquor licenses of the top 6 bars in a huge ass city......all hell broke loose. They did nothing wrong (they are very very strict on who comes in), but she wanted to send a message that she was the HNIC!!!

Here in Cali you can't smoke in any of the bars or clubs. Even though I smoke, I think it's a great law. Why should I be allowed to kill other people. I'm doing a fina job of killing myself, no need to help anyone else:)

Because someone in a bar is killing themself anyway. That's why! Sorry, but, like I said, alcohol is a legitimate poison to the human being. It hardly makes sense to tell people they can't smoke poison, but they can drink it.

You know, I completely agree. Non-Smokers should not have to pay for smokers problems, and I think the reverse should be true. Therefore, it is wrong to tax cigarettes and give that money to non-smokers. I want every dime I have spent on cigarette taxes back...

Also, banning smoking in bars is ridiculous. It is your choice to go into a bar, so go to a bar that doesnt allow smoking. Let the bars choose whether to allow smoking or not.

It should be the business's choice, not the governments...

Smoking in government offices should be banned, as you are forced to go there (DMV, Courthouses, etc.) but a place that YOU CHOOSE to enter should be beyond the reach of government control...

Right. That's what I meant to post the last time, but I was irritated with my newfound NeoDavid.

Once again, the government is over-legislating. Plain and simple. I hate smoke(yet somehow I always manage to date smokers :confused) thus I would rather enjoy a smoke free environment whilst I pickle my liver. However, I don't want ANOTHER goddamned law restricting individual freedom.

If there is a market for a smoke free bar, then let the bar owner make that choice. Fast food chains and grocery stores have been smoke free for years. Why? They saw a market and changed to accomodate it.

The gov't does not need to stick its nose in everything. End of story.

go to a bar and you come home and need to wash your clothes and your hair - you stink! I wish they would ban smoking in bars outright

Hmmmm

So they aren't going to hire someone because they smoke, isn't that discrimination? Whats next seperate bathrooms for different races? Why does it seem that this country is always taking steps backwards.

I was a smoker some time ago........when I used to smoke, I couldn't smell or taste much of anything. Now that I have been smoke free, it is amazing at how strong the smell of cigarettes are. I mean, when I'm working out in my gym, I can immediately smell cigarettes on a smoker almost as soon as they enter the gym. I had no idea how much it stunk shit up and I also had no idea how many smokers there are that go to my gym.

I don't mind being around it though. I think the gov't needs to step back and quit making a law for every goddamn thing........especially things they don't need to be involved in.

That's not a good parallel. Smoking is a choice; race is a genetic condition irregardless of personal choice.

Right, and I'm sure there are billions of people in this world who did not "choose" to be their natural born ethnicity. ;)
