i live in washington state and our local government is having a problem with cash, like many cities. their were some issues about city employees who smoke. people who smoke, on average, take more sick days, which tax payers pay for. they also spend more time at the dr's orifice, which tax payers pay for. are less productive due to their taking more breaks, on average, than a person who does not smoke. also, they are hospitalized with serious illness more than a non-smoker is.
so, with all the controversy and other cities in the state doing the same, my city will no longer hire people who are smokers.
cant say i blame them. i dont hate those who smoke. i used to smoke, but why should i pay for the insurance rates of a smoker? why should i pay for their extra days off needed to visit the dr. or because they are sick more often?
anyone else live in a city where they have done this? so far it's a pretty big issue here and people are trying to fight it.
