A shooting board on which I spend time, guys get scammed constantly. It is always a . or a 1 or I or 0 instead of o and so on. There are other variations as well.
I saw it happen to somebody today

Fact check: Hackers using visually similar characters to deceive in phishing schemes

Hackers are using characters from the Cyrillic alphabet that look similar to Roman letters to redirect people to malicious websites.

At least since mid 2000s. Probably earlier.

Yep, Cyrillic letters that look like Roman letters, that, too. The computer sees them very differently and sends them to a different place although you may not be able to tell the difference

Can you tell the difference?

Fraudulent: steve.j@Ьing.com (Note the Cyrillic “Ь” instead of the Latin “b”)

Legitimate: www.google.com

Fraudulent: http://www.xn--ggle-55da.com (www.gооgle.com)
