Sterilizing vials/media bottles with pressure cooker

Can someone break down exactly how to do this? I got a pressure cooker that goes to 15psi, also have autoclave bags. Where I'm stuck is I see everyone talking about needing to get the moisture out after using the pressure cooker.

I see people say after running them through the pressure cooker to place them in the oven on tin foil to dry them out.... But I feel like if i do that after pressure cooking them, then I'm just exposing them to bacteria potentially.

So where I'm at is

-Wash vials/media bottles in alconox
-rinse in distilled water
-put in pressure cooker @15psi for 20min
-??
-Fill, stopper, cap

Can anyone jump in here for me?


In the past I've been told

-Wash vials/media bottles in alconox
-rinse in distilled water
-wash in 70% alcohol
-rinse in distilled water
-cover with tin foil
-bake in oven @350*f for 1hr

I could ultimately do that but I feel like the pressure cooker is a much better idea.

It has a certificate stating that it actually removes 99.99% of bacteria. The other cheap chinese versions of these dry air sterilizers don`t reach 180 C and wont really sterilize the vials, at least thats how i understood it. The little machine has about 2-5 cm of space in height(inside dimensions) which is perfect for our 10ml vials, especially the 55 x 20 mm vials.

I`m buying one myself and will gladly let you guys know how it goes. My understanding of the subject after reading this thread and the post in the link below this text, is that steam sterilization is not fitted for our use(unless sterilizing membrane filters or syringe filters) because of how it will wet the equipment sterilized. You can do it as part of a two step sterilization project with first autoclaving rinsed vials and then drying them and sterilizing them in the dry heat sterilizer. This is how a lot of the guys selling sterile vials on eBay do it.

For you guys in the US who has some money to spend, i would check out the Wayne S500, you can find it for 595 and it has a lot more space, it is not a static sterilizer(they use more time to reach 180C) and it looks very easy to use.

I’m always looking for a better way as well but what I have read is cover loosely with aluminum foil when you dry in the oven, this will allow moisture to evaporate.
 
Yes, you will need the foil to protect vials from contamination.

Just a quick update: Picked up my Emmi Steri 15 today and the 46mm vials i have fit perfectly standing up, will be exciting to see if it can sterilize properly.

Why not just buy pre-topped sterile vials? It is so much easier and you don't have to worry about any issues with improper technique or anything. I did that recently so I could filter all my gear through a micron filter into brand new, sterile vials.

Is there some reason you don't want to go with ready-to-go sterile vials? I got these: Amazon.com

There are a ton of options though even just on amazon: Amazon.com

Expensive as fuck. That's the reason.
This is how I started,I cringe when I think about it.
In the long run in particular....it becomes a major expense if you put everything down.

How many vials do you go through? $1.50 each seems pretty acceptable to me? Versus how much time does it take to go through the process of sterilizing and putting the tops on DIY vials? To me I would MUCH rather save that time and spend a little more. My time is more valuable to me than a few dollars. Even if I go through 50 vials in a year (which seems like a TON of vials to me?), I am only spending $75.

I know you homebrew, I do not currently do this. How many vials do you go through when you homebrew? Is the time savings (and peace of mind, not having to worry about potential contamination/procedural error during the sterilization process) not worth it to you?

Looking at gpzmedlab, it looks like DIY vials work out to be like $1 each, right? Between the stopper and the vial itself, both seem to run about 50 cents if you buy a pack of 576 of them. That is hardly even cheaper than the finished product. You can find some on amazon as low as about $1 each. Then you also have to buy the crimper, which looks like it is pretty pricey too.

Am I missing something or looking at the wrong sites to buy these things? It just doesn't seem like that big of a cost savings to me and seems like it eats up a decent chunk of your time. To me it seems like unless you are a vendor pumping out thousands and thousands of vials, pre-sealed is the way to go.

All your points are solid. You are in the US I figure. Under your circumstances,your arguments are all valid.
I am in Eastern Europe.
I have to buy vials from UK(ebay) goes through customs nowadays. If they are properly sterilized,none knows.
The price is 3€ per 10ml vial,including shipping and each time waiting forever for the delivery.
I have had issues with the rubbers some times.
I was pushed to use 25g needle to draw otherwise I was having chunks in the solution. 23g was ruining it.
The dry heat autoclave works every single day.
I just throw the vials in with whatever else is inside. It is automatic and has a timer that you set.
Whenever I homebrew,I do it for a long time.
2 Years worth? How many vials really depends.
I don't sell.
I don't save time buying pre crimped when I have to wait for 30 days and dealing with customs.
You can never know if the sterilization is done correctly when you buy precrimped.
There is no risk of procedural error or contamination when I am doing it. I cannot give you specifics on why,sorry.

1000 non problematic butyl rubber stoppers 30$
1000 aluminum seals 20$
20mm crimper 35$
Shipping paid once 50$
Vials price depend on size. Cheap like the stoppers bought in bulk. I think.
I reuse my vials. I have different volumes.
10/20/30/50/100 ml. I have like 5 of each or something.

Sorted forever. No deliveries. I have other things to be thinking of.

No offense, but you should be thinking abt how to make more money so the price of vials and rubber stoppers doesn't seem so expensive to you. What you think is expensive isn't shit

Wife's dry heat used autoclave cost either 150 or 200€
2000something model.

Had to pick it up in person because it was very big and the delivery would cost a lot.

Also, I have heard something about pressure cookers...

Its not just the cost, ive tried them and always found particles in them. You can't really trust a random seller on ebay, they could be taking short cuts. If you want to be sure its done right you have to do it yourself.
