if you think the japanese were honorable...do a search on " The rape of nanking"

the atomic bombs dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki were not in retaliation for anything...they were simply to avoid a mainland invasion of japan...which would have clamied so many more japanese civilians lives...im not condoning it by any means....but war is hell, and the japanese had the chance to surrender after the firstbomb, but choose not to....we gave them 9 days or so before the second one.

One wasnt enough. They were given the opportunity to surrender and would not. 2 almost didnt get them to surrender. Think what you will but way more JAP and U.S. lives were saved by those bombs than killed. Japan believed it was more honorable to die than surrender. Most of their people did not want to surrender. Even after the 2nd bomb a majority favored fighting til the death. Their emperor was in the minority on the surrender. We would've had a land assault that would've made all other battles pale in comparison if not for those bombs.

One was way more than enough. After seeing what the first one did and dropping a second puts the powers at be in the same boat of any other mass murderer.
As you said. Its tough to judge..I wasnt there so I will retract the mass murder statement.

Its funny though, my thought process as of late would be that if you could put ever fanatical man, woman and child in a remote corner of Afganistan and nuke them..I would be all for it so I guess I would have to put myself in my own catigory.

I am right there also. I have had those thoughts for a long time. I guess I am not any different than them maybe, just on the "right side"

Good job thick! I was going to make case for why the second bomb was needed but never got around to it.

neither were necessary, think of all the japanese moms, grandmas, babies, daughters, that died that day... no one cares about them and the effects some still sufer today. from what i heard, from the smithsonian museum, is that japan offred to surrender before the first bomb but that they only wanted control of their own goverment in return, but the US said, NO! we want a conditionless surrender and pushed the big red button.

Will you address the fact of how many lives were saved? The Japanese wanted to fight until they were all dead. I tell you what, if your son is in the army and the option is to end the war by dropping the bomb or end the war by a massive land invasion, what would you choose? I would choose w/o a second thought to save my son and fellow americans and the expense of the enemy. I just dont see how anyone w/o family involved can even judge the decision. My dad, uncle, and other relatives have been in the military so I value their opinions. I have not so my opinion means jack shit on the matter. However, I do believe w/o a doubt that it is a FACT that more lives on both sides were saved rather than destroyed due to the bombs. Why dont you read "The Old Breed" or some of the other WW2 books from personal accounts and put yourself in their shoes and c how you feel.

p.s. Why would we want to let Japan surrender on their terms?

yea, i see everyones point but i just dont agree with destroying two cities full of innocents. i'm sure if canada and the USA got into a war(humour me please) you guys could justify nuking halifax and and quebec too and i know if germany had done it to london or paris if they had the ability it would be looked at as the worst case of terrorism the world has ever seen. also, i think having family involved can only cloud your judgement instead of looking outside the box. but anyway guys, i know you're all really good guys and i know we just feel differently about this so lets agree to disagree.

Holy moses I couldn't believe how long this thread was.....I watched it and that was just downright heinous. That poor, poor family that had to watch that video....completely traumatised for the rest of their lives. What a sick way to go.........again we see how much people just don't value life.

Shock

lol, true

We did it to Japan, and they didn't fuck with us again.

Steve, I wouldnt blame Germany or anyone else to win at all costs. Look at the consequences of losing. Not like if you lose you go home and get a checkbook. We are talking about a war. A war where the loser will probably be slaves or slaughtered. Either way u r right. We can agree to disagree even though I am right lmao ;)
