This is true. Anytime you lay mulch you want to go about 3inches thick. You can definitely make it stretch as little or as far as you want, but from a moisture standpoint, and from a weed control standpoint(if you do not lay down a weed barrier before hand), a yard will cover about 100sq.ft. at about 3 inches in depth throughout. 3 inch depth is pretty much standard across the board in any commercial outfit.
