Tobacco and Hormones

Bros,
I used to smoke AND chew smokeless tobacco. I quit, and have government sponsored programs and Zyban to thank for that. However, when I don't get enough sleep, I find that 'having a dip' usually keeps me on track. My hormone 'imbalance' causes me horrible focus problems. I can't concentrate on anything. But when I have a dip, I feel completely normal... no depression, no anxiety, better concentration, etc. No kidding. But I'm not going to start again, it's been over a year since I quit.

Is there anything related to the use of tobacco and hormone levels? Or is it, perhaps, just the side effects of nicotine (and other disgusting chemicals they put in their)?

Zyban contains the same ingredient as popular antidepressant (Wellbutrin): bupropion hcl

That antidepressant works by blocking reuptake of norepinephrine. It is also mildly blocks the reuptake of dopamine. This combo is known to alleviate depression, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating (for many people). A lot of ADD/ADHD medications work in a similar manner.

So about hormones...I don't know. But there is definitely a correlation between smoking and neurotransmitters.

I wouldnt think that tobacco would have any positive effects on hormones... i would say its the effects of the DRUG...nicotine.. and your body recognising it again..its so addictive. Nicotine works on your central nervous system and can be relaxing or stimulating depending on your mood.
The Neuro transmitter Dopamine is affected by Nicotine... which could be alot to do with its addictive properties and all the positive feelings you are getting when you "have a dip". So in other words its just covering up the symptoms you are complaining about. :)

Putting that powerful carcinogen, for hours, right next to moist, warm, absorbant tissue sounds like a great idea to me. And to REALLY get the desired effect, add in some ground glass to scour up some fresh tissue.

I wish you had been with me as I did a cardiac Consult on a fellow in the hospital who just had most of his face removed surgically to TRY to get rid of the mouth cancer his dipping habit gave him.

If that happens to you, you will want to have your back turned to everyone all the time.

That's a very scary reality. I would probably rather die.

the focus, attention, anxiety, poor sleep may be a part of the hormone imbalance or something else entirely. ADHD, depression, anxiety disorder, thyroid d.o., are all possibilities. Further once you are addicted to nicotine, it does have a calming effect. Still on zyban? (zyban=welbutrin). If not, you may want to go back on and have the doc review the dose.

I do not want you, or anyolne else, to face the same face as that formerly handsome fellow.

I'm putting it down forever after this can... I'd only picked it up because I has having a shitty shitty day and it was the first time I'd dipped in about a year. I'm not starting again.
