Got my MRI results back today. The bottom half of my labrum has torn off my scapula, it may have been torn for sometime and just got aggravated under heavy benching. I will need surgery and a minimum of 12 weeks to doing any lifting. Pretty bummed guys. If anybody has any experience with this type of injury or recovery from it please share your experience! Thx guys

I had completely shredded my labrum in my right shoulder and had it fixed, along with 2 tears in my rotator cuff and a bicep tear. I was riding my R1 4 weeks later and was lifting light weights about 8 weeks or so later. I didn't do all the rehab I should have done and built up some scar tissue that limited my range of motion and caused some pain. I also was weak as shit. I finally pushed through and just hit 495 on bench again in November of last year. And I'm 38. Took me about 5 years. And I still can't do incline barbell anymore. Moral is, yes you'll be fine. Just listen to the physical therapist and do EVERYTHING they tell you to do in rehab, no matter how much of a pain in the ass it is or how much it hurts. Don't be like me and blow that shit off. Good luck bro. You'll be fine. No worries.

I had surgery on my left shoulder back in 08, blew of the therapy and started back in the gym to early. Lost a lot of my range of motion and still have pain in it to this day. Now just had surgery on my right shoulder back in March and I follow the advice of my physical therapist to the T. It has sucked not being able to hit the gym, but I am glad I have listened to my therapist this time. My therapist just started letting me go back to the gym and lift light weights with limited exercises. But 4 months post surgery I already have more range of motion in my right than my left and less pain. So, I wish I would have stuck to the physical therapy routine the first time. It sucks, but just suck it up man. It is very important to listen to the therapist and not do more than he/she tells you to

Hey thanks guys! It makes me feel a lot better to hear from somebody that went through it, that I'll come out fine on the otherside. I don't care so much about losing all my gains as I do about never being able too lift heavy again. They say bodybuilding is a sport for life, and that's what I want to do with it. And, Bigwin, if you put up 495 anytime after surgery, then I have no problem going under the knife. @sapperdaddy I will take PT very seriously and take lifting slow, make sure I do it right the first time. Thanks

Yeah man as my boy above said DO YOUR REHAB! You'll be fine. You'll lose some gains and rehab kinda sucks, but do exactly as you're told and with hard work and muscle memory you'll be back in no time. Sooner you get it done the sooner you'll be back hitting it hard

I blew out my shoulder, no surgery but three months of PT with no lifting at all. Can't stress this enough...listen to the ortho and pt. They tell you not to lift, don't lift. Every horror story i hear about post-injury problems is from someone who decided to ignore the pt/ortho and head back to lifting without clearance. I checked EVERY lift with my PT. She told me which ones were ok, and even offered some alternatives when she killed certain lifts.

good luck!

Yeah lightspan, I was just reading a thread the other day where you talking about your shoulder. How did it take before you were cleared to do overhead and bar exercises?

2 months to start anything in the gym, and she made me promise to clear every exercise before starting. She was pretty cute, so I humored her. I was really good about pt and home exercises so I got past the 2 lb pink dumbells and bands in less time than expected. Just be upfront about your love of lifting and your desire to get back in the gym. A good pt will help you get there.

It took me a good three months to bench an empty bar. I'm hovering just under two plates on flat bench, right around 145 on OH press. Gonna give the gh a bit of time before I push too hard, working on higher reps and pause sets/dropsets rather than jacking up the weight. Give it time, do what you're told, you'll heal nicely. :)

Damn alpha I didn't think you were that smart... Loljk

@lightspan hey bro are you glad you didn't get surgery and do you feel like you recovered decently without it? I don't thinks it's a must in my situation but if the instability is gonna affect everything else in my shoulder and cause worse injuries later in life then might as well. It's like the bottom 1/3 of the labrum, no bank hart or slap tear. Can you share some more about your specific injury?

lolol hahaha no one ever associates meathead with graduatig with top honors and top percentage of your university. in other words i act extremely goofy and silly hahaha

I had adhesive capsulitis ("frozen shoulder") where your joints literally freeze up. Surgery is putting you out then manually ripping the adhesions by manipulating the arm in the shoulder joint. I also have impingement and arthritis in the AC joint, which they can fix by cutting out the entire AC joint. I worked at pt to get range of motion back and learned to stop doing certain exercises that aggravate the impingement. I won't have surgery unless there is no alternative. I feel like my recovery has been pretty good. I have a small tear in my rotator cuff but nothing that needs surgical repair (yet). If you can skip the surgery, my 0.02 is to try a non-surgical route. Some stuff just needs to be fixed though. Talk to your ortho
