Train same body part twice a day

In my 20's I'd train a body part heavy in the am then again in the pm, lightly. I blew up.
Any advice in this regard for someone 30 years later?

Yeah...unless you’re Ronnie, don’t have 60m, or train like a pussy this is usually a terrible idea. The only reason to train twice a day would be that you can either recover well enough to takes two beatings a day (this is MEGA RARE), that you don’t have time in a single block to thoroughly train (thus making one session into two), or that your training is nowhere near hard enough for one session to satisfy the stimulus needs for growth.

Thanks bro

If you insist on giving it a go, I think Tnation has a decent guide on twice a days of the same muscle group. I’ve also done different groups for twice a days; one workout is heavy to failure, the other is pump/volume. That’s a bit more challenging to layout. What I found is that if you have 60-90m to train once a day, it is far more simple (diet, training), effective (focus on a single session), and manageable with life.

Lot's of guys in the 70s trained 2x day and I still see lots of people training 2x day, but not the same body part.

We have 50years of knowledge on the 70s. And a lot of those guys were bb by profession. If your ONLY focus is recovering for training, much more doable. But there’s a reason the 2x a day guys aren’t just better...because it’s very hard to optimize and some people genetically cannot recover. If you move big weight, 2x a day is also MUCH harder.

For hypertrophy i dont see any benefit to hitting the same muscle groups twice a day unless you can handle so much volume (with enough intensity) that you can't get it done in one session. I don't really think there's anyone in that situation though.

I can see someone benefitting from training different bodyparts though like Mac mentioned but you have to be smart about how you split it up and program your workouts so your lower back, shoulders or even knees get too fatigued.

I would recommend to go hard for 1-2hours, get home, eat recover and get ready for a new workout the next day.

I've sort of decided - after doing a little digging and seeing confirmation in the comments - at my age especially, same body part twice a day is not only unsustainable but counter productive.

I think expanding the # of X's I work certain body parts each week is a more sustainable strategy. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Oy,
Back in the day, I would train 2x a day, for two days in a row IF I were going to take a complete break from training for more than a week. Great for subsiding the prevacation guilts.
