Trump Timeline ... Trumpocalypse

KABUL — Afghan officials on Thursday denounced President Trump’s praise of the 1979 Soviet invasion and occupation of their country, which he described this week as a fight against terrorism, breaking with decades of Republican anti-communist tenets.

According to the https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/a-defensive-trump-calls-a-cabinet-meeting-and-uses-it-to-boast-deflect-and-distract/2019/01/02/21600a3a-0ec3-11e9-8938-5898adc28fa2_story.html?utm_term=.ab13fb63d0c1 (revisionist historical account) Trump delivered during a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, “the reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia.” He added: “They were right to be there. The problem is, it was a tough fight.”

The comments marked a surprising split with U.S. conservatives dating back to President Ronald Reagan, who saw the invasion as an attempt to spread communism and aided insurgent forces fighting Soviet troops.

The remarks also raised eyebrows among officials in Afghanistan at a time when Kabul has voiced frustration with Trump’s https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/afghan-government-puts-brave-face-on-us-withdrawal-but-experts-alarmed/2018/12/21/6f17dc94-0504-11e9-9122-82e98f91ee6f_story.html?utm_term=.ce91aa3eae10 (sudden announcement) of a plan to withdraw up to half of U.S. troops as https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/afghan-momentum-on-peace-election-slows-to-a-crawl/2018/12/28/76d8e3ea-0a8d-11e9-a3f0-71c95106d96a_story.html?utm_term=.4126c41e2c9d (peace talks) with Taliban insurgents continue without Afghan government involvement.

Our Founders wanted to make it very hard to remove an elected president — and they succeeded. On the surface that seems like a triumph for “the will of the people,” but the reality on the ground is much, much more complicated.

That’s because the Founders also believed a rogue president would be held in check, both by the constitutional powers of Congress and the judiciary and by the unspoken balance of a free press and an informed citizenry.

One by one, those institutions have been gutted or eroded — a cowed and highly partisan legislative branch rigging the courts in its own image, and a media weakened by both economics and political bullying which in turn has made that citizenry less informed.

The modern how-many-angels-can-fit-on-the-head-of-pin church of timid, performatively objective journalism has built a shaky moral framework that can proscribe penance for the earthly sins of a Gary Hart or a Bill Clinton, but collapses in a heap when confronted with the large-scale immorality of a Bush-Cheney presidency — let alone the massive dishonesty and corruption of a Donald Trump.

At times it seems like today’s media can’t even find the language to describe the threat to democratic norms that grows greater every day that Trump remains in the White House. The fact that it made sense for so many journalists to discuss and advocate Bill Clinton’s resignation, but not Donald Trump’s, makes absolutely no sense at all.

SOME GARZONGING ADVICE
https://claytoonz.com/2018/12/29/some-garzonging-advice/

There are roughly 800,000 federal employees affected by Donald Trump’s government shutdown and will have to wait to receive back pay if any at all. Since Trump’s shutdown is expected to last into the new year (in case you’re a Republican, that’s beyond the first of the month), many are wondering how they’re going to make rent and pay other bills. Fortunately for them, the Office of Personnel Management has tweeted some advice. Barter.

That’s right. Barter. Tell your landlord that you have been furloughed due to Donald Trump shutting down the government over a racist vanity project and that you’re willing to do some chores to reduce your rent. I’m sure your landlord will be understanding, especially if he’s a Mexican-hating wall enthusiast, and will promptly find some toilets for you to unclog.

The OPM says it can’t offer legal advice on this matter, so those furloughed should consult with an attorney. How are they supposed to pay an attorney if they can’t pay rent? Of course, a lot of federal workers are restricted from taking outside work and would have to discuss the matter with their supervisor, who has probably also been furloughed. If it’s your job to answer the phone at your agency then there’s probably nobody there to answer when you call it yourself.

The bartering advice is so bad; it makes you think some idiot appointed the head of the OPM. Who appoints the directors of federal agencies? Oh, yeah. Donald Trump, who claims federal employees are fine with the shutdown because they want the border wall, and most who aren’t being paid are Democrats.

What a boob.
