What a torn pec looks like >

I came across this picture again of Scott Mendelson's pec tear injury. I'm sure there are a few others who've seen it but I thought I'd post it up. Makes me cringe everytime I see it! Pec tears can be serious, even requiring reattachment sometimes. I've had a few relatively minor injuries over the years but never a torn muscle. I know some of you guys have some real horror stories though.

There is also a video of the lift that caused the injury, his pec gives out towards the end of the video:

Really great powerlifter. Goes to show what can happen to a professional in this kind of sport. Next time you guys are benching over 700 lbs... Be careful. ;)

Saw the pic a while ago. That must hurt something fierce man. Definitely looks rough.

Had not seen the video. That is a lot of weight to be pressing. Could have been an ugly situation, spotters did great.

Thanks for the full story on it.

Holy shit.....I can't even imagine what that must have felt like..

Probably just tickled a little... ;)

I've seen pics of a few other guys with bad torn pecs and it looks similar to this. I have seen this one several times, I think it is a "popular" one for lack of a better term. This guy is crazy though... Im not a rich piana fan but there's a video of him with Scott Mendelson learning how to arm wrestle that's pretty cool Ill have to look for it and post it up for anyone not familiar with Scott.

Yeah, more like tickled alot, and jot the good kind. That's like the kind of tickling catholic priests do lol.

I think I've seen n that video actually, I don't wholly agree with everything Rich piana does or says, but as a whole I like.him because he seems like he's a nice guy, and his videos are usually pretty entertaining.

Thats what I thought my PIP felt like from my 1st taste of test prop with lint like particles in it.

I actually witnessed this happen to a guy at my gym last year. Strong guy, bodybuilder, but never touched his chest on bench by about two inches. He was doing sets with 365, no spotter and it looked like he went just a bit lower than he normally did and one side just gave out and he got crushed hard. Me and another guy got the weight off of him and he was kind of in shock. It didn't look nearly as bad as that picture, but after a few minutes it was obvious it wasn't okay. He drove himself to the hospital pretty soon after.

I've talked to him since, doctor said 9-12 months off most upper body work. He did legs only for awhile and I saw him doing dumbbells on one side only a few times. Seems to be back to some light upper body work now, but no bench from what I've seen. Not sure what they had to do for him at the hospital surgery-wise or physical therapy-wise though.

And I think that is a pretty good story on why you always touch your chest.

I brutally tore my pec over a year ago. If you research it you'll notice that lots of people don't feel much pain. I didn't. I definitely went into shock for a few minutes though. Oddest thing about it was "hearing" it tear while it happened. Sounded like velcro being torn apart. Don't feel like typing out a book full of nonsense about my recovery but it's sucked to say the least. I think I'm roughly 14 months out of surgery and I'm only able to workout with 135 on flat bench without discomfort. I was doing more than that but I re-tore it a little bit so I dialed it back down permanently.
