What's melatonin

I know what it is...I think. Correct me if I"m wrong, but it's a chemical in the brain, yes?

So, what, then is the shit you buy in the store? Is it synthesized in a lab or is it there an herbal variant that affects your own melatonin levels? What is it?

That's a scary thought.

All I know is 6mg and I'm out for 10 hours. One bad thing is the sometimes horrifying nightmares that tend to come with the awesomely deep sleep. It's a trade off.

Exactly!! DEEP, long sleep aid. the trade off is nightmare'ish dreams.LOL:)

Beefy, don't you read the bottle? You're not supposed to take more than 2mg. Silly guy. ;)

Now goddamn you sonsabitches, what's the stuff made out of? Maybe they suck it out of cadaver's brains. Booooooowoooooowooooooowoooooo!

That's what I was thinking.

I never knew I was overdosing, honest. Another good relaxer is valerian root, but it tastes and smells like sheet (shit).

I've taken tons of that stuff and it never really makes me sleep any better. Although when I do sleep, I have the nightmares. So basically it just gives me nightmares but doesn't make me sleep any better. I've heard that it is a supp that works better as one ages, and I'm still pretty young. Come to think of it, even prescription sleeping pills never did much for me. Luckily I'm sleeping much better now.

That still doesn't answer your question Grizz, although I wouldn't see why the pills wouldn't contain actual melatonin.

it's synthesized melatonin.

my old room mate said he didn't respond to it so he just kept taking higher and higher dosages at the recommendation of my other room mate. he got up to 30mg/night before i found out and slapped some sense into both of them. the room mate that was egging him to go higher and higher can't sleep without it anymore.

There are some foods out there which contain melatonin, I don't know which ones though. This is why your FDA can't regulate it properly and so it is sold as a dietary supplement or whatever OTC. Like one of the other guys already said, it's essentially synthesized.

I like it it does give you some weird dreams. It helps me get a good nights sleep but leave me foggy in the morning and makes it hard to get out of bed for work. I have down 1/4 pot of coffee before I feel awake again.

Grizz there are two grades of OTC Melatonin.

The first kind is Natural. Animal, or bovine grade melatonin. It contains the actual extracts of the pineal gland. Because it comes from animal tissue, this grade of melatonin may be accompanied by viruses or proteins that could trigger an antibody response, or possibly an alergic reaction (unlikely in most people)

The second is synthetic or pharmacy grade melatonin, which is produced from pharmaceutical grade ingredients. This form is molecularly identical to the melatonin that we produce in our own bodies, without the unwanted extras that may be produced by Natural Melatonin.
