Why do fat guys do ab work?

I don't think op is saying it is time waste.
I think he is just suggesting that if a six pack is the end goal, there are more efficient ways to workout.
 
I never understood why people would do it either, unless they just didn't know what they're doing. In my opinion I always thought of bodyweight ab exercises to be for people that are actually lean enough to see their abs in order to get that little extra bit of shape and definition. Just in terms of strengthening your core, I was under the impression that good compound lifts like back squats, front squats, deads, etc. would strengthen the core a lot more efficiently than some planks.
