Will this affect my muscle growth?!!!

Over the weekend I had an accident, I had a 2 1/2 inch piece of metal shoot through the front of my leg missing both bones and artery. The piece is now embedded in my calve muscle. The doctors gave me antibotics for 20 days 4 x a day 500mg and some pain pills. The Doc said it was so far in my leg that it would cause more damage to go in after it then to just leave it in there. So the plan is to leave it there unless my leg gets infected. I asked if this would hinder my lifting and he said no, after the soreness goes away I could resume my lifting in about three weeks.I didn't say anything about steroids to him and I'm wondering has anyone had anything like this happen. I just don't see how the muscle is not gonna be effected as the muscle gets bigger. I was supposed to start a 16 wk cycle Monday but have pushed it back due to my injury.Should I just have them take this thing out or what? He said many people are walking around with pieces of metal in them with no prblems but how many of them are are on the sauce and getting 30 lb gains with no problems?

I would respect what your doctor says when it comes to an injury like that, he is the expert, or get a second opinion.
If it was me, I would hold on any AAS until you have fully healed.
3 weeks is not a long time to wait for an injury to heal.
Being on antibiotics as well I would play it safe.

No I don't plan to jump on anything right now, may be quite some time for that.I'm wondering if down the road when I get cleared by the doctor if it is going to affect my muscle growth when I get back at it hard. Is this thing gonna start moving around on me or cause problems in the future if so I would rather have them take it out now and heal then to have to come back and go though all this again. It's pretty damn painful and right now I'm missing work for next three weeks and I love my job so I don't want downtime again. My job is very demanding physically sometimes others time we sit around and wait for something to happen.

Honestly, I think these are all VERY good questions, that I too would want answered. But I think you are asking the wrong people. Your doctor is someone you should be asking, he is your doctor. If it concerns you that much to leave in your leg, you have every right to let him know how you feel. Ask for other opinions from other doctors.

Just my .02 bro

Take care

My dad was sitting at the table eating one day when my mom noticed some blood on his pants. He went to the hospital and to find out it was shrapnel from Vietnam that had worked its way out of his leg over a period of 20 years.

I would have the metal removed if it was myself in your shoes.

See that is what I don't need to happen. I asked all these questions but he just seemed to say oh no you'll be fine there's lots of people out there with shrapnel out there and they have no problems.I have an appt at the VA Hospital on thurs for second opinion. I went to the ER when this all happened.

It's not like your calves are full of vital organs or lots of vessels or nerves that would be at risk if the foreign body were removed. Personally I would want it removed unless there is a compelling reason not to remove it. Talk to a different md, preferrably a trauma or general surgeon and see what they say. Make them tell you exactly what the risks are with taking it out and leaving it in.

Definately talk to a surgeon about it. He/She would know better than an ER physician. Just because somebody is a doc doesn't mean they are informed. I can't possibly see how leaving it in would be a good idea.

I have seen many similar occurences and in my experience as a paramedic. The ER doc or a surgeon usually immediately takes the foreign body out through the whole it made going in.

Good luck bro,
Jayce

p.s. what happened exactly?

Ditto to what most of these boys said. Have the thing removed. The quicker it's removed, the less time you have to wait for the healing process which means the less time you have to wait to jump into a cycle.

You don't want the burden of having a piece of metal jammed in your leg whilst doing XXX pounds of squats. It might not make a hell of a difference, i'm no doctor. But I know it would surely ease my mind.

All the best

Thanx guys I working getting an appt. today with someone else for the second opinion. I'll let you know how it turns out.Thanx again for the comments.
