Your First Meet

This write up has been a long time coming, just been busy with life. I'm no talented writer either, so we'll see how this goes.

Choosing a Meet

Best place to start with this is powerlifting watch. Here's the link for that:

Powerlifting Meets | Powerlifting Watch

Obviously you'll want to find something close. Here's a chart with some basics of each fed:

natl-feds-table1.jpg

Obviously the majority of us here aren't natty, so that part should be a no brainer. As for the rest of it it'll come down to your preferences. I'd probably go with sleeves over wraps for a first meet just because timing getting your wraps on for your attempts can be a little nerve wracking.

For more in depth rules just Google search the fed in question with rules after and most have a pdf download where they'll get into the more in depth rules. Commands, clothing, etc.

Choosing a Weight Class

For your first meet you should just come in however you are. Have fun. Trying to cut weight and all that is going to ruin your first experience competing. Save that for when you're going after records or qualifying for nationals. If by some chance you are doing one of those for your first meet I guess start a thread and ask about it.

Choosing Your Equipment

For this you'll need to go over the rules of your chosen fed. You'll need to choose the right sleeves, wraps, singlet, wrist wraps, deadlift socks, shoes, etc. You need to be sure they're allowed because they will be inspected before the meet.

Choosing Your Programming

This is something else beyond the scope of this guide. If you're a beginner or early intermediate you can probably just train normally and then deload the week of the meet and be fine. If you're more advanced you'll want 8-12 weeks prep time. If this is something you need help with start a thread about it and someone will surely point you in the right direction.

Choosing Your AAS

Again it's beyond the scope of this guide, but I'll touch on it briefly. You'll probably want to time your cycle to end at the meet. Test, deca, tren, dbol, drol, these are pretty standard. Halo, TNE, TRNE on meet day for more advanced users. You'll want to finish with your oral the weeks leading into the meet. Or start and finish, I suppose, if your cycle is longer.

Preparing for the Meet

At some point before the meet you'll want to start practicing commands as they'd be given at the meet. You can find them in the rulebook. Have a partner give you the commands as you do the movements. It's also not a bad idea to lift in full meet gear a time or two before the meet. You don't want any shocks throwing you off your square on meet day. You want to be comfortable and practiced.

Choosing your Attempts

You might hear other ways to go about this, but this is my preferred method. Your first attempts should be a weight you can hit for a triple any time. Second attempts should be a weight you can hit for a double any time. There should be no question that you'll smoke the first two attempts. This will help build confidence and set the tone for the day. Your third attempt is your PR attempt. You should have an idea what this will be. A range depending on how you feel and how the second attempt went up.

Three weeks out I like to work up to a heavy double. This is my second attempt. Two weeks out a heavy triple. This is my opener. Then deload the week of the meet. Again this is just my preference, but in my opinion you can't go wrong with this approach. If you don't really know what you're doing just do this.

Meet Day

How they do weigh ins and everything will vary a little by fed. It's pretty universal you'll weigh in, get your gear examined and you'll have to give them your first attempts. Might be the day before if the weigh ins are earlier.

You'll want to bring plenty of food. Carbs and high sodium stuff is your best bet. It's going to be a long day, so pace yourself. Bring plenty of fluids, too. Best to save the sugary and caffeinated drinks for later in the day to avoid crashing early.

For warming up there will generally be weights available. Not really going to go into great detail here, just warm up about like you would to max at the gym. Dynamic stretches as necessary. Just keep in mind you're already warmed up from squat, so deadlift warm-ups should be minimal to conserve energy.

On the subject of conserving energy find a good spot to chill when you're not warming up or making your attempts. Try not to get overly excited or emotional. Just be cool. Personally I don't get hyped up at all or use ammonia for my first or second attempts. No need since you should not miss them. Save it all for the third attempts. This is important and often overlooked in my opinion. Save your energy wherever you can.

I mentioned turning in your first attempt numbers. After your first and second attempt there will be a time limit for you to give your next attempts to meet staff.

I will say again here make sure you've practiced your commands, especially bench. Bench is where I've seen the most problems. I've seen lifters get disqualified for missing the commands on all three of their attempts. That's another point worth mentioning here. If you miss all three attempts on a lift you're done for the day.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.

Any of y'all have anything to add here?

This is gold!!!

I just want to stress certain parts that I feel some people tend to underestimate:

1) high carbs and high salt foods immediately after weighing in and as much and as long as you can but without feeling horrible to the point you can't lift. You want to keep your protein and fat intake pretty low so you don't get filled up quick. That's not to say you can't eat protein and fat just that your focus should be on carbs and sodium. Here are just some of the things I ate: salt and vinegar chips, jerky, peanut butter and jelly, bananas, chicken fingers and fries, hamburger and onion rings, brownies, donuts, poptarts, and much much more. I gained approximately 17lbs in around a 15hr window if memory serves me correctly. I could barely put sneakers on bc even my feet were bloated but I was able to perform just fine.

2) timing. Bring a buddy with you if possible whose sole job is to pay attention for your name being called out for when you're in the hole, on deck, about to lift, etc. don't miss/forfeit attempts bc you're not paying attention. You should be focused on yourself and what you need to do to win and having someone around allow some of freedom to focus without needing to constantly listen to your name.

3) warmups. Do as much warmups and stretching as you need to but the minimum amount so as not to exert unnecessary energy. Your energy must go into the attempts that count and warmups don't count.

4) I can't stress this enough RULES RULES RULES RULES RULES RULES RULES. Read your fed's rule book and memorize it. Learn to quote from it like you're reading off a TelePrompTer. You domt want missed lifts bc of stupid rules like your head coming off the bench in some fed's. It's embarrassing, costs you and attempt, wastes energy, and shows a lack of discipline and/or preparation. The weeks leading up to the meet try to simulate meet conditions. That means full down and press commands on bench, that means waiting to squat until you get the nod from the front judge, that means don't slam down or drop the bar after a pull. Read the fucking rules and have friends simulate meet commands in the gym, call out depth, etc. STUDY THE FUCKING RULES PEOPLE!

I'm down to march to Millard's house with pitchforks and torches and not leave until this is stickied If you are lol
Let's do it. @Millard we need to get a few threads stickied in this forum that would be beneficial to lifters seeking to compete in powerlifting.

Your First Meet

Testing Your Max Too Often

These two would make great stickies in this thread. Can make them a sticky Sir?

For the first time I just really looked at your avi. Is that your dog looking like he's killing a pit?
Those are my babies! They play rough, lol. The black dog is a female lab/sheappard mix and weighs about 60#. We got her at a shelter type place, she was shipped up north from a hurricane damaged area of the south. The other is a male pit and weighs 80#. My kid bought it off some shady douche bag in Lawrence when they were 5 weeks old!! He had two, my kid bought two. His friend has the other.

The pit could destroy the other dog in an instant but he loves to be chased. It's the weirdest thing. The lab is basically a butch lesbian dog. She tries to hump the pit from time to time, so weird. She is also aggressive where the pit isn't unless defending our people. The pit is very very very protective of my god daughter and will literally bully the lab into the corner of a room if she comes into the same room. It's awesome to see the level of protection he provides her.

I know the pic looks savage and that's why I like it but the black dog knows her place.

Yeah the pic looks Savage but fitting for our sport. We have to be animalistic to continuously put our bodies to and past its limits with these heavy weights.

Trying to convince my wife to let me get a German Shepard puppy. My gym owner also trains dogs. All types of training. He trains K9's service dogs just mention a few. He said he could get me a Shepherd and train to be a guard dog.

Especially with my daughter and the new baby on the way, I know how protective the dog will be.

My wife says well, you have all those guns and rifles. I said yeah you have a gun too, that no matter how many times I train you in its proper use, from safely operating the firearm, to loading unloading, aiming center mass squeezing and not pulling the trigger along with proper breathing technique. She still can't operate it.

Funny story I left out the house early one morning. And I didn't shut the door all the way. The house alarm goes off. She calls me to tell me. She was calm and she did exactly what I said to do if someone broke in. She grabbed my daughter told her to lay flat in the tub, then she positioned herself behind the far end of the dresser. Which gives her a perfect silouet of the intruder in walking in the upstairs hallway.

Any way she pulled the slide back to load a round in the chamber and kept doing it, because the rounded were ejecting. I got home and was cracking up. By the time got done pulling the slide so many times she had no rounds in magazine. All these unfired rounds just laying on the floor.

I even got snap cap rounds. You load the magazine up with these cap rounds. It's to practice loading the magazine. Allows you to dry fire with out damaging the firearm. And I got her an autoloader. She just doesn't take the time out on her own to practice. I can teach all day. But if she doesn't practice what I teach it's futile.

Love dogs, will never live a day without a dog by my side. German Sheppard's are bad ass, fiercely loyal. They can do a lot of damage quickly.

We got these bullets that shoot a red lazer when fired. It's cool because you can see where your sights put you and it's a lazer so distance isn't an issue. I'll post the product when I get home.

Sorry to hijack the thread PA

Sorry @Perrin Aybara to get this side tracked. @Millard Baker can you please move the post about firearms into the guns thread?

We really would like to keep this clutter free, and stick to the topic. My alologies for getting side tracked.

i think this was all covered very well. only thing not covered is just to have some fucking fun and meet as many people as you can at the meet. you will no doubt meet some awesome fucking people that day who will be more than willing to help you out.

just to further compound, RULES RULES RULES. lol
i bombed out of my first meet because of bench commands. Nerves got the best of me. which is another point perrin brought up. stay as calm as possible throughout the meet until you have to turn it on. conserve your energies towards lifting.

also, USPA or RPS or GTFO ;)

So popping an Adderall would be a bad idea or a first timer?

if you are used to it, i would not see a problem with it. personally i wouldn't be able to.
I have a high tolerance for shit. I can take an adderall one day and have minimum energy. It all depends on how I slept the night before. I also have Modafinil/Provigil. I like that better, gives me much better focus. What I like about Adderall is that I crash at some point not hard but I feel tired. I usually get good sleep the days I take Adderall.

I've never done adderall, but I did my first meet 2.5 weeks ago. I will say, you will not have any problems with energy levels. I only slept 4 hrs on Thursday night and Friday night before the meet and I was exhausted. When it got time to lift I was fucking jacked. I had no idea how much the adrenaline would take over, it was unreal! I will add, after driving home 3 hrs from the meet I was exhausted! The next day I felt like I had been in a fucking car wreck, sore and tired as hell. I wasn't expecting that as I train very hard, but there is no duplicating the intensity and energy expenditure of the meet! Good luck and have fun!

Thanks bro for the advice.
