Any reason they cost so much? I have one of http://www.ebay.com/itm/231281787368?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I used for a different project. I added a gauge and adjustable pressure switch for a net cost of around $60 today. Can I use it, or is there something about those $300 units I'm missing?

Are you using it to filter gear? I can't comment on that particular pump but an old refrigerator compressor makes a great pump and you can get them for free. It should work great for filtration as they are low CFM/high static pressure. Look for an older unit with a capacitor start - they start easier when pulling against a load.

Yes, to filter gear - at least when I get that far along. Sounds like there isn't anything special about the expensive pumps, then. Wish I had thought of a refrigerator pump at the time, but this thing works pretty well.

im interested in what type of pressure switch you used...because when you say pressure switch im thinking of Square D 20/40

I used a vacuum switch for car transmissions, like http://www.ebay.com/itm/201005941697?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT one. It works fine, but to adjust the pressure you have to remove the vacuum line. I didn't plan on changing it once I had it set.

Oyu can.make one really easy. Go to a home dopot and there you go. Copper, a couple gauges, hose amd a pump, teflon tape. Easy.
