I'm going to have a similar variety.. Except mine will include about ten different tomato varieties. My favorite part of the garden is tomatoes...I usually don't eat them at all during fall and winter cause they just do not taste right to me and then eat several everyday in summertime right off the vine. Would like to do a ton of San marzanos this year and do tomato sauce and homemade ketchup out the wazoo.

I remember having to stay bent over all day during my summer break picking beatles off the potato plants during the harvest. Drop em in a folgers tin with a lil motor oil at the bottom. That and rocks...fucking rocks.

We had an old fashioned farm mall. With the pigeon toed front axle? Know what I'm talking about? Fucking thing was a piece but it did the job. And a 1 ton scottsdale for everything else that required moving. My dad was an asshole but he could fab/build/repair anything under the sun. I mean anything. My first build was helping him pull the piece of garbage 6.5 L GM diesel out of the truck and rebuild a bare 350 block for its replacement. Ported it, assembled the valve train, torqued and spec'd every damn bolt and bearing and ran better than new. Get this...my dad had a passion for the iron too. It's probably why I grew up with it in my veins. He wasn't a BB or a strongman but he was always the biggest and definitely the scariest dude where ever he went. Gargoyle genes I called em. No other way to describe it. Aesthetic? No he was 6'2 so he said but I've seen 6'2 guys that have to look up to him. He was 260 ish. Had a back wider than the sun. Huge strong legs. Kinda stringy long arms but not weak. Kinda odd looking I guess. But nobody would ever fuck with him...ever. alpha without even trying. He never worked out regularly but in between projects which he was always doing projects he would do squats, pullovers, bench presses some curls. You know simple shit. We had a massive pole barn with a dirt floor. Kept the sun and rain out so he could work. It was set on 60 acres of NY country property. That's where I grew up. 35 miles from anything really. In the middle of his projects he would walk over to his preset 495 on a make shift 2x4 rack and rip out rep after rep. No warm up. No chalk. Work boots and jeans. Like I said...me and dad can't get along but he is the strongest mother fucker who ever lived. That's all I gotta say about that

oh yea I do a few...tomatoes are a bitch and take a lot of attention. I may do some hanging baskets out of 5 gallon buckets. You ever done them like that? lots of fruit production since the plant doesn't have to put energy into vegetation production to support the weight of the fruit structurally.

Im with you on the greenhouse/hothouse tomatoes they are junk. What they do is pick them when they are green then gas them to add color. That's why they are blood red but hard as a rock and taste like shit....it's really just a big green tomato. I love me some romas and cherries.

Yeah I did something similar with strawberries last year except a storm came through and killed them...

I know!! I tend to despise commercial produce. I've seen the storage warehouses where they store apples to sell for the following year. They call it putting the Apple to sleep because they gas them and seal the doors. I've heard they use argon though not nitrous. I'm fortunate to live in an area with plenty of fresh produce from local farms and orchards. My backyard is the best though.

I'm jealous. I miss having first hand access to that stuff. The best I can do these days is sprouts. They sell organic local grown produce and grains. That's all they sell AND cheap too. I get most all my veggie goods from there. If I can't grow it I'll keep the flow of $$$ in for those that still bust their ass and do

Wintertime can really suck here don't get me wrong but when summer is in full swing I'm at farmer's markets every weekend...I fool around with making wine and beer at home. One of my favorite things is going to an orchard and getting a bushel of peaches, blueberries, Apple cider etc. and starting a batch of wine. Where I'm living now is great for the open space so going to try and go a little crazy with a garden.. Nice feeling to have way more than you need coming from the ground. Suck up to me enough and maybe I'll send you a box of goodies ;)

I love going to the farmers market, not only are all the fruits and veggies organic, but the prices are half what i would pay in the store and i get a far superior product. And over here we have pretty much year round fresh veggies and fruits.
I went to the FM a cpl weeks back and found 3 tangelos for a buck. They were huge and juicy. Also avocados 2 for a buck ect.... And like Trukker said, i like the fact that my money goes to hard working farmers.

good stuff..thanks for sharing Squatch.
I can see it, it's interesting to see the bigger picture, suddenly everything is so much clearer :D

I don't get to make the farmer's market much but my girl goes. We are cleaning out under the farmhouse and building some shelves in hopes we can get it going again as a well organized root cellar. We will give a lot of our fresh veg to families and friends, barter with the neighbors for services. We will can/pickle a good amount and store, but this year I'm planting a ton of excess for a lil side project.

Here you have to pay a stall fee at the farmer's market, but we plan to sell some excess produce off the tailgate to avoid incurring charges...then donate the proceeds to a nonprofit that builds/modifies homes for service connected disabled veterans who currently own a home that no longer meets their physical needs. Renovations are provided through volunteer labor and at no cost, the aim is to restore dignity and a greater quality of life.

It's odd man...
So my girl pushed me to get more involved with some of these programs because I was kinda in a funk, struggling with feeling satisfaction from my day to day routine. I always find work but she thought it would get me out into the community more, occupy some of my time and be good for my social life . So I did it...shit man to be honest I think I get more out of it then these guys do.
Some of the conditions these men live in are bad. It's very rural and not a lot of economic opportunity. Some live alone and have part-time caregivers or programs that provide assistance like meals and what not, state sponsored. The roads aren't very good and some live so remotely that come winter these programs just don't/won't operate functionally. Volunteers end up getting out there to take care of the community, it's all volunteer fire, first responders, etc. All these guys are too proud to ask for help, whether they need it or not. Most times you literally have to just be like "look let me do this for you please Sir". Wheelchair ramps, non slip coatings, handicap accessible bathrooms. Something as small as putting down new indoor/outdoor carpeting in a guys trailer so his cane/walker doesn't snag on the existing threadbare carpet is a big deal for guys.

Just being able to talk for awhile has really helped me work through some stuff. I like it, I think I will keep at it. (don't tell my girl she was right )

I remember all that shit. Readjusting. It is hard. Just remember one way or the other your woman will usually/mostly/kinda be right ;)

its all my girl man, shes way more involved and has been for some time...I'm new to it all she recruited me. It really doesn't take much like one day a month and you can knock some shit out. I see it differently though, not like we are doing some great work or something...I feel bad we cant do more. It makes you keep things in perspective too, I think about things I "want" differently now. It's hard to rationalize spending a couple hundred bones on a LED light bar for my pickup when there are guys that are fucking humpin it like that everyday and need not want not. There some tough motherfuckers in this world Bo, the resilience and tenacity of the human man never ceases to amaze me.

anyways...she offered to sell off the tailgate so I won't have to be away from the work. We are able to buy cheap from salvage yards and reclaimed materials leftover from new construction surplus. I think we should be able to do some good with about a 50 dollar seed investment. It's all bout the sweat but my youngest brother is indentured now thanks to that shotgun and others will come along and contribute where they can. I'm highly competitive and seeing as its my brainchild I don't intend on letting it burn out.

That you on the oars brother? Badass action shots right there. Round here we float the coastal tributaries for salmon and steelhead. My Dad is a master oarsman and takes on some major white water and Boulder infested water. I'm still mastering the art of rowing but enjoy the hell out of it. Beautiful pictures TEK
