Fadwa Alaoui is a Moroccan-born Canadian citizen living in Brossard, Quebec. Like a lot of Quebecers, she sometimes drives down to Vermont to take advantage of the deals. But on Saturday, when her family pulled up at the border, Alaoui encountered something new.

After the usual set of questions, Alaoui was asked about her religion and her thoughts on U.S. President Donald Trump. Border agents took her phone and fingerprints. Four hours later she was told that her family wasn't welcome and she was forced to turn back.

Alaoui spoke with As It Happens guest host Helen Mann about her ordeal and why she is struggling to explain what happened to her son. Here is part of their conversation.

I read this story and am not surprised at all. To be fair the US border guards are tough on everyone from my experience. Is it right? Imo if it's the average citizen with no criminal record then it's discrimination. Example of how strict the border can be. A known Cdn(hip-hop Mc) was banned from touring the US. The reason he had friends in a certain known MC club. Border agents pulled up pics of him on the net posing with his "criminal friends" and denied him entry. So technically "guilty by association" Smh brutal!

60-80 % off all farm workers are undocumented immigrants. There is not an American work force to replace them

If your a truck driver in the US and have ever been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors you are not allowed in Canada forever. Guess they have their reasoning. But the fact is, it's their country and they have the right to be as strict as they want. Nobody has the "right" to enter a country they are not a citizen of. It's a privilege.

I have answered a friend here regarding that exact thing. a comprehensive immigration reform that deals with past and future immigration without casing havoc on economy and innocent people's lives. I don't think we should open our borders to everyone.also deporting, It's not how you deal with the ones had been here for decades!!

If real border security was enforced and illegal immigration was curtailed. I think a lot of people including myself would be more open to leaving the ones here and move forward. UNLESS you are proven to manipulate our system or break our laws then they really have no reason to be here...
Unfortunately in America your intent doesn't usually dictate if a crime was committed. You say innocent lives, and i understand they want something better but laws were broken. To me that's not innocent.
I don't know where you live but maybe i deal with a different reality. Where i live there is constantly immigrants from mexico chanting viva la mexico. 90% don't or act like they don't speak English. A lot of them abuse our system.
Why if i send my English speaking child to public school he gets thrown into a class off 35 kids with 1 teacher. But the illegals that don't know English send their child to the same school. They get put into a classroom of 20 with 2 teachers so they can be taught English and learn? ?!
When many of our ancestors came here they also had good intentions. They came here learned English got a job and wanted to be an American.
Most liberals like to brush off the facts so they can push their agenda. If you can't see that these are very much real issues that need to be stopped then maybe you should come to my side of town...

My friend you are talking about a lot of socioeconomic problems as a country we face from public schools to multicultural society. How do you know all these immigrant who are chanting viva la Mexico, illegals?? It's their heritage. I am sorry but the USA is a melting pot of the world. Are you sure you are not worried about this county having less white white people in it? Loosing the majority?
Do you think America belongs to Americans or white Americans? If you answer this question honestly,you will get your answer. Personally I don't look at their heritage but their ability to be a good human being and a good citizen of the world when I intract with people.
