Scholar of Useless Knowledge

I was reading an oil filter breakdown in my monthly subscription and also found a pair of studies online that seemed to go hand in hand. Breaking down whats hidden inside the filter and whats good and what isnt. The gear heads would be interested in stuff like that. Especially if your like me and do everything humanly possible yourself. I like to know and trust my parts AND WORK!

Interested?

There are several labs that test oil for metals and contaminants. I cant remember who we used back in the day but we would send a sample in out of the race engines and woyld get back a complete analysis.
It would tell us things like dirt...bearing babbitt...ring wear and cyl wall wear cuz of the different metal particulates found.

I've seen too many collapsed fram filters to ever put them on my shit. I like wix, I've cut a bunch of different brands open wix and nappa gold filters seem to be about the best practical options.

Mobil1 is great oil. Alot of stores mark it up to outrageous prices due to its popularity. I go order mine online at Walmart and set it for pickup in store. They offer deep price cuts that way. Last order i got a 5qt jug of mobil 1 for about $22. The parts stores want $40 and an mobil 1 oil service station wanted $70 for an oil change using mobil 1.

Hmmm $22 vs $70 and if i do it i KNOW itll get done right. Tough choice...not

In summary the Motorcraft, Purolator, Mobil 1 and Wix tested the best.
Also if your one of the folks that doesnt do your own work id like to know what the hell the shop is putting on your truck/car! Its a misconception that a dealer ALWAYS uses the best parts. Some dont use factory approved parts or even worse the factory approved parts are garbage!
