Gut health / Digestion aids

There are a number of ways to improve your gut health and digestion. Things like eating fermented foods (Kim-chi, Sauerkraut, drinking Kombucha), using supplementation and certain foods like yogurt and kefir that help a lot.

What do you guys use to improve your gut health and digestion? Cost vs. effectiveness? I keep reading that you want to have supplements that are refrigerated for gut health as the ones that are kept out are useless or not as good.

For the ones that have a routine to improve gut health and digestion, I'm curious of your usage and the impact it's had so far on your well being and performance on a daily basis.

I brew my own Kombucha and ferment my own fruits / veggies. I can only eat so much sauerkraut and kimchi, ya'know?

Love carrot and daikon radish. Also digging some mango habenero pickles / green beans.

Tons of regular greens and fruit on top of that, specifically pineapple and papaya.

I can't say that I notice a difference in performance. Just in how I feel.

Less bloating and indigestion mainly. Better transit time as far as what I eat versus eliminate.

Right on.

I've always been interested in making my own kimchi and sauerkraut. Looks like a very easy process.

Lately I've been feeling a little "bubbly" and gassy. I never took probiotics or ate fermented foods. So I'm starting to now. Hopefully things will start feeling better. I'm not a big fan of eating dairy, even though I love yogurt.

With all the calories and protein weight lifters eat, digestion and gut health is very important.

There's a shit ton of probiotic supplements to take with like 1-10 billion active cells, which I know nothing about. People seem to have positive results with digestion with these. I guess it wouldn't hurt to include this into my regime as well.

Kombucha, kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurts are all great food options.

Pre/Probiotics, betaine HCL, a greens supplement are good options for supplementation.

I've been putting sauerkraut on my chicken lately. Don't know if it's placebo, but already feeling better, digestion wise. Added bonus, the stuff taste awesome on chicken. A little pre/post for extra sodium too.

I'm grabbing up a probiotic this weekend. You have any recommendations or are they generally all the same, more or less?

Can't think of the particular brand off the top, the Ex stocked me up on the one I'm using currently. But definitely go with a refrigerated live culture.

The pills are ass.

I tried making my own kimchi. It’s not horrible but came out nothing like the store bought stuff so no clue if I did it right, although I did eat a 1/2 gallon container with no horrible effects.

Trial and error like anything. It didn't blow your ass out, so it's a solid start.

I've just recently started adding some raw ginger in before meals. Definitely helps and it's super cheap.

Just want high active culture count. Don’t have any specifically to recommend.

Kefir. The real stuff you make daily, not the fake bottled stuff

26 active microbes. It’s been shown to affect even the large intestine. I take it daily for maybe 15 years

Imho there is no better inoculation of your guy.

^ agreed, I used to do my own kefired milk when I had the time. Honestly though it is something you have to devote a bit of time to and I meandered to other things. Very worthwhile though.

-Kombucha tea (drink normally one a day)
-sauerkraut mixed in with 1 meal a day(normally about 2-3tbsp)
-kimchi mixed in with 2 meals a day (normally 2tbsp with breakfast and another 2tbsp with dinner or before bed)

Definitely have noticed a big difference over time with consistently using these 3. At first they all gave me all types of gas and my wife hated me. Literally could t do anything without rancid gas and shits lol. TMI apologize. The kimchi especially seemed to really work well for my gut. Secondly would be the kombucha tea. No specific time when I drink it I buy a case at the grocery store and take one to work with me every morning.

I’ve heard a lot about kefir but never personally used it myself.

I’ve noticed since taking the kimchi gAs is drastically reduced, I have 1 cup a day with mid meal. I also switch the MRE Lite protein so I’m not sure which caused the stopping. I’ll switch to whey protein at some point and see if it comes back

A lot of time gas is a sign of a change in the microbial profile. Can be good and short lived.

Where are these mango habanero pickles you speak of!?

I was listening to John Meadows talking about this on youtube. He said that usually saurkraut and other fermented foods are pasteurized and therefore the good bacteria is dead. Is this true?
Also, how much does applecider vinegar do for digestion?

Why you make your own.
