About Texas

Well, with all this shit going on I am seriously considering leaving the peice of shit state of New Jersey. I'm going to take some time off this summer and travel to some places to see what's out there.

Im drawn to Texas. I know quite a few of you guys reside here. I do heavy highway construction or infrastructure. I'm a general superintendent for the past 10 years on some of the larger projects in the north east. Wherever I go I dont want to pick up and travel for work.

What places do you guys recommend. I'm looking for as much property and seclusion as possible. Unfortunately in my line of work I need to live near congested areas. I hope to keep my travel time under 1 hour.

Also looking at Tennesse. Any other suggestions? I want to move away from these liberals and gain some rights back. Plus move away from 10k+ property taxes and inflated cost of living. I want a better life for my kids.

Texas is great, you can easily have a rural home with some good land and be less than an hr outside of a large city

I loved Texas. $250k just outside Houston has you living nicely on a decent plot within 20m of the city. Austin got a little weird. Dallas seemed a lot more like a typical big city. Houston was ideal for me.

IMO, you'll want to be near the Dallas-Fort Worth area. My recommendation would be to go down and rent for a year before you bought a permanent place. I know you said you wanted some land and seclusion, and you can find it, but you'll also need to balance schools, commute and which part of DFW as some areas are better for schools and property value (North DFW) and some areas are easier to find seclusion.

I was looking at the Houston area and will be renting for a year before i pull the trigger.
What do you guys think of Corpus Christi area?

Houston is humid as hell. I'd visit in summer. I mean, Texas is a furnace in the summer regardless, but the humidity is a bitch.

I’d stay north/northwest of the city if it were me.
Agree, these are the better parts.

And I'm still recommending DFW. So many large construction jobs as corporations continue moving there, the work will be good for years. It never stops.

That's my main concern. I work outside and can barely stand the summers here. I'll be visiting in the summer to see if its bearable.

You get used to the heat. "I" don't like heat plus humidity. But for the work you describe, you can't beat Texas right now. Google 'Billion Dollar Mile'. I still prefer the East Coast, but work/life/family balance, Texas is like the 'easy button'.

Outside of Houston is where it’s at. Austin area is beautiful but weird and turning liberal from all the California folks/businesses that are moving there. As Mac mentioned, look a bit north up around Lake Conroe and the Woodlands area.

I’m very well traveled in and out of the states. TX will always be my home. Some bitch about the heat but us who live here take advantage of it and play in the lakes, rivers, creeks and ocean nearly 10 months out of the year. I myself have a 5th wheel camper on a lake that I get away to quite often.

Businesses and the economy are always strong around Houston. I am in a very similar profession and have made a very comfortable living.

I grew accustomed to the heat and humidity very quickly. If the Mexicans can do it so can you. :p

Houston was also the best gym time I’ve ever had. Training in a space with the bay doors open, 95deg, sweating so much it feels clean. Would love to have it back.

William brothers construction

They are the biggest state highway contractors, I used to work for them back in high school.

Wish I could pack up and split outta Jersey but I'm kinda stuck here for many years. My friend from Michigan now lives in San Antonio and loves it. I've been to Austin but as others have mentioned its turning into...idk what.

I always thought I was stuck here to but fuck it you only live one life. What's holding you back?

If you move somewhere in search of Shangri-La in the United States good luck.

When we look at liberals we see that if it weren't for big government they would actually align much more with our world view of freedom to do what we want with our own bodies. Granted today's liberals are mostly idiots caught up in skin color and sexuality, but there was a time when classical liberals were the go to for a balanced conversation.

Conservatives get caught up much more by morality bullshit, of loyalty, family, flag, bible, obedience to authority, purity, writing more legislation to put more people in prison. Look at the number of conservative presidents that created and escalated the war on drugs. For all practical purposes most conservatives are world class dickheads and that's putting it mildly.

Find a place where there are libertarians, but then you won't have a place that taxes anyone and so there will be no big construction projects.

So as you can see there is no great place to live in the United States, it's a giant freakshow, so go anywhere you can work, save money so you can retire early and leave it all behind.

Many outsiders deny it but there is just a different attitude in Texas. Lived in the DFW area almost my whole life minus some job moves but I’ll always call Texas my home. I recommend DFW area suburbs. Joshua/Burleson is a good place to find some cheap land. Plus, the burleson high school picked up John Kitna as their Football Coach if you have kids.
