I don't understand why it is so difficult to unequivocally condemn a terrorist attack without resorting to whataboutism, the both-sides, and the false equivalence arguments.I love how people are acting like the police and local government didn't do anything about the BLM protests. Tons of people were arrested during the rioting. Look up any story about the riots and you'll see arrests.
Can we stop with the whataboutism and address the issue at hand? "Oh yeah, well what about...?" is not a good argument for a position. Yes, other people also acted badly. And?
I find it difficult to overstate the significance of this terrorist attack. It was the U.S. Capitol building which is home to Congress and a main seat of power for the United States government. Congress was in session to certify the election of Joe Biden. Everyone in the world knew that many of the most powerful people in the government were present including the three top individuals in the Presidential line of succession as well as the VP-elect. To attack when all of these people are in the same place at the same time... Wow - this is a big fucking deal.
How do you quantify the seriousness of this attack. Measures such as the death toll and the damage to property do not even begin to capture it.
If deaths were the most important criteria, people should be more outraged by the 3,964 Americans that died from covid-19 complications on January 6, 2021.
