About Texas

Well, with all this shit going on I am seriously considering leaving the peice of shit state of New Jersey. I'm going to take some time off this summer and travel to some places to see what's out there.

Im drawn to Texas. I know quite a few of you guys reside here. I do heavy highway construction or infrastructure. I'm a general superintendent for the past 10 years on some of the larger projects in the north east. Wherever I go I dont want to pick up and travel for work.

What places do you guys recommend. I'm looking for as much property and seclusion as possible. Unfortunately in my line of work I need to live near congested areas. I hope to keep my travel time under 1 hour.

Also looking at Tennesse. Any other suggestions? I want to move away from these liberals and gain some rights back. Plus move away from 10k+ property taxes and inflated cost of living. I want a better life for my kids.
Seems like you need to follow the money. Most of tbe money is going to red states. They are the welfare states after alll. Texes is a safe bet for now unless ypu ever need help, in that case you are fucked and would be better off in a blue state.

The economy is about to take a shit on all of us. And i don't give a fuc but your state may not be a wise move.

I personally think think things are going to get really bad in the next couple years.

Red states will let you starve if you are between work, fucking cocksuckers. They think about no one but themselves. And lets face it sometimes we need help.

Fear not if you are broke they will give you a one way ticket to cali.

Most of my family is in west texas and Louisiana..All heartless redneck motherfuckers. They would piss on you if you needed help.

Like I said I think things may get 70yrs bad.

So red states are bad because they won’t give you a hand out? If that’s what you seek no wonder they tell you to go to Cali.

Frankly, you’re talking out of your ass. I live in a red state and if I was to become unemployed I could file for unemployment and receive enough to help get me by while I actively sought out another job. Of course they don’t give you enough to make you comfortable or we would see what we saw when they raised unemployment funds during covid, no one would want to go back to work. Our unemployment rate would look like blue states.

Crazy to read that “red states are bad because they will let you starve if you don’t have a job.” Well, duh. Would you like for us to wipe your ass to?

I’ve also been considering the same move from NY/NJ to Texas. I need to be near the water. Considering Galveston for it’s proximity to Houston. I have 2 small(ish) children(10 and 8). Can anyone provide info?

Booming economy and plenty of work. Have you ever visited the gulf coast? It’s hot and very humid nearly year round. I would imagine it’s night and day from where you live now. Both Galveston and Houston are blue cities so be prepared to pay higher taxes than if you lived right outside of those cities.

Living on the gulf coast is great! Salt water or fresh water all around you.

I haven’t been, but, I see Galveston and other places like it in TX have a similar set up to which I’m accustomed from the NJ shore, that is the house on the water with the canal(we call them lagoons) with the boats and waverunners right in the backyard. Didn’t realize Galveston was blue, hard pass. Aren’t there other similar type locations along that souther TX gulf coast?

Apologies, I was wrong about Galveston being blue. Really thought it was since most of our bigger cities are since that’s where people from out of state flock to. Take Austin for instance. Every year more and more people from California move there to get away from their high cost of living and taxes and what do they do, they vote the same way that destroyed the state they are running from. Rant, over. I’ll step back from politics.

Once a year my family rents a beach cabin like you’re talking about. Sometimes right on the beach and sometimes a few blocks away from the beach where we have access to canals that access the ocean or bay. Galveston although is an island don’t expect a tropical paradise. The gulf is pretty murky due to the Mississippi and over rivers pouring into it. It does turn a beautiful Emerald green color quite often during the dry season.

Living like you’re talking about on the water is what we call a sports man’s paradise. The fishing and crabbing is incredible. Insurance is what’s gonna cost you out the ass. They get hurricanes very often. Hurricane Ike wiped out nearly all of Galveston county. Nearly all beach cabins are new and come with a steep price. I can remember as a teenager going in with a few buddies and renting a beach cabin for a week for around $1500. Last year a 3 bedroom beach cabin cost me $4k for 5 days.

Anywho, the gulf coast is a great place to live. Hardly have winters meaning you can play on the water nearly year round. I’m more of a fresh water guy and have a 5th wheel camper a few hours north of the coast on a lake.

You should definitely plan a vacation there before taking the leap

Those politics are the reason I’m looking to get out of here and go there. Yes, the locust leaves the place it’s wrecked only to wreck the next place it invaded and is too stupid to understand what it’s done. We have a raised house(about 6’ up) on a lagoon down the NJ shore, I know about the flood insurance. Our lagoons get a little shitty as well, even though we’re only a couple miles from the inlet and open ocean water. I plan on going for a little bit before relocating, naturally. Thanks for the input.

I also thought all the time about how to move and buy a house somewhere near the Gulf of Mexico. I really like it, but I highly doubt it. I traveled on business trips around the world and lived mainly where it was cold and very cold.

I was looking at the Houston area and will be renting for a year before i pull the trigger.
What do you guys think of Corpus Christi area?

Corpus isn't worth the chaos of Tourist season... from Spring Break through the end of the summer. Fun to visit though.

Moved just outside of Houston, near Galveston Bay in 2005 from Colorado... fucking love it here.

If you're in Industrial Construction... you're definitely in luck.

Ike didn't wipe out most of Galveston County.... I live in Seabrook (since 2005). However, there was a lot of flooding near the coast lines... Galveston, Bacliff, San Leon, Texas City... The Seawall and the Texas City Dike helped with the surge there.

However, You're right if you're referring to Bolivar Peninsula (One of my favorite hangouts). It got fucking wiped clean. However, most of the houses were extremely old and mother nature just pruned them out. The newer houses that were built to code were able make it.

One dude tried to ride it out and his house was flattened from the storm surge. Managed to float on some debris and made it ashore.... Incredible. The highest ground elevation along the Peninsula is around 6' and the storm surge was close to 20' there I think.

Love living on the Gulf Coast for sure... Don't miss the cold from up North.

I was. That’s my old stompin grounds. Ike wiped out every beach cabin but one. It was the most bazaar thing. Literally left nothing but the concrete slabs.

Yep, incredible. Believe that guy was retired special forces. Something like that. I remember reading/hearing of the story and thinking not many would have lived to tell that tale.
