I do understand why many members are disappointed. I get the perception that there was bias influenced by financial considerations. This is unavoidable.
It's a reality that I accepted when deciding to operate under a sponsor-supported model over 25 years ago. There will always be doubts about the sincerity of my motivations.
MESO has worked hard to maintain editorial independence separating moderation decisions from advertiser influences. And unwavering in its support of free expression when it comes to members wishing to share their opinions, experiences, feedback, reviews, and criticism of sources in order to hold them accountable and positively influence harm minimization.
Yet the doubts were raised in the two specific situations that you mentioned - one involving Naps and most recently one involving QSC.
Naps and QSC engaged in behaviors that were widely and justifiably condemned. Many members sought permanent bans.
MESO opted for temporary bans allowing them to remain on the forum subject to ongoing scrutiny and accountability. This was understandably controversial in both cases.
In the first instance, MESO issued a temporary ban for Naps. The situation escalated when a small group of influential members were subsequently banned after they openly violated MESO rules and attempted to discredit the forum as an apparent way to protest the lack of a permanent ban.
This added fuel to the speculation that financial motivations influenced the decision. I understand why some people saw it that way.
At the time, and ever since then, I've clarified that those members weren’t banned for criticizing a source - they were banned for blatantly and repeatedly breaking MESO’s rules. In fact, before, during, and after the bans, I made an open call for other members to continue criticizing Naps without restriction.
Naps even demanded I stop the criticism, but I refused, reaffirming MESO’s commitment to community-driven accountability over financial interests. MESO lost their sponsorship as a result, and Naps voluntarily quit the forum.
(Naps was banned for three months, it’s true they were not permanently banned at the time. I could have claimed otherwise, but I believe in being transparent - small details and facts matter.)
In the second instance, QSC was also given temporary ban. Any suggestion that financial pressures from sponsors influenced the decisions to avoid a permanent ban is particularly preposterous in this case. QSC never supported MESO financially as a sponsor or any other way.
Any financial pressures - explicit or implicit - would have clearly supported a permanent ban over a temporary one since all MESO sponsors would have benefited from a QSC ban. Additionally, several influential members lobbied for QSC to be permanently banned.
Despite these pressures, MESO stayed true to the principles of harm reduction forum I've outlined - to keep all sources present when possible, regardless of size, popularity, or reputation, in order to hold them accountable.
In both cases, decisions to not permanently ban Naps or QSC were made out of loyalty to the vision of a harm reduction forum that holds all sources accountable, not because of financial considerations.
I hope the actions MESO has taken - including losing sponsorships and enduring criticism for sticking to its principles - dispel any lingering doubts about the influence of financial motivations.
I know some will remain skeptical. We’re not perfect, we make mistakes, and we could have handled things differently but we remain committed to harm reduction. I honestly hope you believe that.
I would like to work together as a community to find ways to improve MESO
even when disagreements arise. I'm open to ideas and suggestions.

Most members fall in the middle. Being against harm reduction is a big shift in that spectrum and I don't think it applies to anyone.
