Award-winning documentarian Ken Burns thinks anabolic steroid users - or "motherfuckers" as he calls them - "should suffer".

Burns was asked about a number of topics including his thoughts on the Baseball Hall of Fame with yesterday's vote electing no new members to Cooperstown. When asked if he would vote for Clemens, Bonds, and Piazza, Burns said he would not have done itt this year. When asked if he would ever vote for them, the filmmaker remarked he wanted them to "suffer for a while." Later on in the interview came this exchange...

"THR: Are you going to do "The 11th Inning" now?

Ken Burns: We need a few things to happen. Like the Cubs win the World Series; that would automatically do it. A few things like that. But you know, there are a few things that never change. We know some pitchers extended their playing careers, we know some people hit the ball farther, but nobody hit .406, nobody had a 56-game hitting streak, no pitcher won 30 games, no pitcher won 35 games, no pitcher won 25 games. Maybe that helps you make it less onerous, but at the same time, those motherf---ers should suffer for a while."

I read that as meaning that Bonds, Clemens and other potential Hall of Famers suspected of steroid use should suffer by having their induction delayed and not as a statement toward steroid users in the general population. Only Ken Burns can clarify, however.

I agree that Burns probably referred to those specific steroid users with "suffering" limited to keeping them out of Hall as long as possible if not indefinitely.

Still, either they are Hall of Fame worthy or they are not. The extent to which they are made to "suffer" - by Burns definition or any other - shouldn't influence that.

That seems a tad harsh. I'll give Mr. Burns the benefit of the doubt, and assume he doesn't realize that most people consider the term "Motherf*****" to be an insult.

In any case, I volunteer my services if anyone thinks that Burns should also "suffer."

I will bring my pliers, a blow torch, and a high powered car battery w/ appropriate terminal connections. :D

Have you ever seen Ken Burns? All skinny guys think anybody built must do nothing but use steroids.

Solo:rolleyes:

I agree that several of the eligible players were done a disservice by the BBWA writers this year. How they can exclude Bonds and Clemens for something that wasn't against the rules at the time it was alleged to be done and wasn't proved is unbelievable.

Agreed. For the price of tickets, I want to see enhanced athletes hit home runs.

For their multi million dollar salaries they should do all they can to perform.

Writers and the ilk of Ken Burns are just sissified weaklings and jealous people.
