The Horrors of Medicaid

I was recently dropped from my private health insurance provider. I ended up enrolling in Medicaid only to find out what a bunch of shit it is. Medications I was previously prescribed need prior authorization and the prior authorizations have been denied. I was told I need to try a whole list of drugs before being able to use the drugs I have been taking, I informed them that I have taken these drugs before and they were ineffective, they said they need documentation (which I cannot provide because the doctor who prescribed me those medications closed his practice and I do not have access to the records).

Furthermore, I was threatened to be investigated if I self-payed for these prescriptions and I could have my insurance dropped all together. Also because I am taking one certain medication Medicaid utterly refuses to authorize another, yet the doctor knows what medications I take and still prescribes them. Apparently Medicaid believes it knows a patients healthcare needs better than the physician.

Medicaid/Medicare is a fucking joke. They abruptly dropped my grandmothers pain medication down by 30 pills in a month without any warning, I guess fuck it if people experience withdrawals or are in chronic pain. They also did the same to my uncle who experiences chronic back pain from a herniated disc and disc degeneration (who is on disability). The doctors recommend prescribing x amount of pills at x amount of mg, but Medicaid/Medicare flat out denies it. I think it is a unethical to threaten to drop peoples insurance just because they decide to pay for their prescriptions out of pocket (because Medicaid refuses to pay for it) and it is plain stupid that Medicaid/Medicare overrules and utterly disregards the decisions and recommendations made by doctors.

I feel like I am being labeled as a junkie and that I am being suspected of drug seeking behavior by Medicaid. It took me years to get prescribed these medications and I went through countless other medications before them. It is funny how much of a difference there is between Medicaid and private insurance companies, this is just ridiculous. I guess I am grouped in with poverty-stricken drug addicts who sell their Medicaid paid prescriptions for crack and heroin just because I decided to seek government assistance because I had no health insurance.

Two words bro. MEDICAL MARIJUANA. Get an WIC or EBT card and your needs are met.
Dont say Ive never done nothing for you. That advice was nothing.:)

You qualified for Medicaid based on your income. If you don't like it get private insurance. If you can't afford it be thankful you have and quit bitching about it.

Yeah, stop crying and get yourself some real coverage. Coverage by the same people who made the tax payer pay for this masterpiece.[:o)]

You obviously don't understand my gripe with Medicaid. I offer to pay for my own prescription and I get threatened by fucking Medicaid to get dropped because I self-pay (mind you, now that my doctor knows I have Medicaid I cannot self-pay for the doctors appointment either). My private insurance, if I chose to pay for it now, would be outrageously high, and it would probably be cheaper to self-pay (I have not looked into the health insurance marketplace much because all of this happened rather abruptly, but they recommend my insurance plan be with Medicaid after I filled out the information on healthcare.gov). However if I were hospitalized or needed something expensive like an MRI I couldn't afford it without insurance. And let's not forget that we are now required to have health insurance.

I don't think your statement addresses the fact that people on medicaid/medicare are getting cut back on pain medications and other medications without warning, and when patients offer to self-pay for a prescription they get threatened and bullied by Medicaid. Why can't people on Medicaid self-pay without being investigated and threatened to be dropped by Medicaid? I guess you think it is alright to let the government bully people because they pay for their medical bills. If Medicaid doesn't want to cover certain things that's fine but why the fuck can't people self-pay for what Medicaid refuses to cover? I can answer that question, because the government thinks everybody that is on fucking medicaid or medicare will sell their fucking medications on the street to go score some fucking crack or some dope. This is a great example of how the government stereotypes and tries to control people.

One day when your old and need Medicare (or even if something terrible happens and you become disabled or something), after paying taxes for God knows how many years, and you get treated like a junkie by your insurance company and told you can't fill a prescription that your doctor prescribed you (even if you offer to pay for it yourself), maybe you will understand that this is unjust.

This all stems from Medicaid abuse. I had patients in dental school on Medicaid drive to their appointments in an Escalade wearing a Rolex. People fuck the system all the time....a system that was already a nightmare to begin with.....the result is they figure if you have the money to self pay anything you must have enough money to not need Medicaid which of course is retarded thinking.....but the people who administer Medicaid are legitimately retarded so what do you expect?

To me medicaid abuse is more the familys that have 5 plus kids. Who can`t afford to have one but figure out that cash benefits run out on one child after a number of years. So what do they do have more children get more money and don`t take care of any of them. They will also have the whole family on medicaid and take there neglected kids to the ER and PD for free all the medication is free then those kids grow up and have a similar family. Its sickening

Because you can't - you want the best of both worlds - medicaid paid for by the taxpayer AND be allowed to pay for whatever else you want out of pocket.

It doesn't work that way - it's not fair - that's life

Bottom line is, as you know, Medicaid/medicare , this fucking government does not give a shit about you one way or the other. And sometimes it's not about being able to pay out of pocket for what you WANT, but not being able to pay out of pocket for what you NEED.

I am pretty sure your right, the abuse of Medicaid by some people has triggered Medicaid to take actions to control the people it covers. I paid for other peoples Medicaid, Medicare, government assistance with my tax dollars for years, but now that I am in a fucked up position I get the shaft. I am probably just going to pick up a high deductible private insurance with a low premium (can't even pick up private health insurance until March). It is sad that Medicaid will still deny a doctors prior authorization request even when they are told a patient has already used the whole list of medications they recommend in the past. I guess I will keep defying Medicaids threats and self-pay until they investigate me and drop me, wish I had knew how they operated before telling the doctor I was now on Medicaid. I would just have self-paid for appointments and prescriptions with my savings and Medicaid wouldn't have known shit about it and I could have kept Medicaid on hand for serious shit that might happen. I was in such a hurry to pick up health insurance when I got dropped I never inquired about things like this. But who would think that Medicaid would be so infuriated with someone self-paying when this ultimately saves the taxpayers money.

The whole process seems absurd to me. I could see them being upset with someone abusing government assistance (not reporting income or whatever), but I would think self-paying (with the exception of I dunno, trying to double up on scripts from diff doctors or something) would be welcomed. Ultimately I believe my personal issue with Medicaid stems from the war on drugs and the widespread abuse and illegal distribution of prescription schedule II drugs. Since it is the poor who commonly commit these crimes anyone, who picks up government assistance (even for a short time) gets stereotyped and carefully monitored and controlled by big brother. Fuck the people who are legitimately utilizing and seeking adequate healthcare (the majority), we got to stop those bastards selling their percocets (the minority).
