High Volume post cycle?

Having spent my formative bodybuilding years in the Dallas area when Ronnie ruled the land, I was and have always been a heavy weight, low rep, high intensity guy. I was able to work out alongside Ronnie and many of his followers for a time too. My ideas on training, diet, and drug use were greatly affected by these guys and I grew like a weed. After I moved away from the Metroplex and and got married, life seemed to get in the way of the gym. I recently started training again and even finished up my first cycle in about seven years. I trained in my tried and true, heavy ass fashion while on. Post cycle, I was doing some research about Arnold one night. I decided to give his high volume training a shot and Have been following his split as well. Too many, myself included, this seems like overtraining. This really appears to be overtraining while "clean". Well, a funny thing has happened. I'm actually continuing to grow post cycle! My muscles seem to be rounding out and appear fuller. Now there are some variables that may have come into effect here too. For one, i have increased calories as I was on a cutting cycle before. Secondly, I have upped my hgh use to 6iu daily. These are blue tops from Naps so 6iu is still a low dose in my opinion. The results that I am seeing are most likely a combination of all these things and I am leaning towards the extra 500 calories making the biggest difference. Still, this is a trick I will employ again after my upcomming cycle. Hell, I might train high volume on this upcomming cycle and see what kind of results that brings.

nice post.

I would like to see what the outcome of that next cycle is...please keep a log.

I am a fan of high volume training as well.
Just be very careful of that fine line between growth and over training.

I'm sure you already know all this.

I will get flamed for this I'm sure but, I think overtraining is really exaggerated by most. I feel that untill you get to that certain level where every little detail matters, overtraining really isnt much to worry about; even natural. As long as nutrition and rest ammounts are where they need to be, it shouldn't be a factor to most. Take a look at many high level NCAA and Olympic wrestlers. These guys are jacked and if any sport thrives on over training, wrestling is it. I know, I did it for years. I could be completely wrong and maybe the years of wrestling forced my body to adapt to high training volumes? Who knows, just rambling now:) I will keep a detailed log for the next cycle. I will run Prop, Tren, Mast and some Var along with 4-6 ius of growth with T3 and Clen so it should be a doozie!

Nah bro I totally agree. Overtraining is an excuse by weak dudes on internet boards to not train hard. I am in no way saying that overtraining does not exist, I just don't think that most people really understand what it is.

Undertraining is a far bigger problem IMO.

Mike Mentzer was not using "Heavy Duty" training when he was at his best.

I mostly train like a powerlifter though, it's just what I like to do. When the old joints start flaring up, I'll switch to more volume oriented training for a few weeks. My squat workout last night was 10 sets of 2 at 75% 1RM w/ 20 sec rest between sets to give you an example of a typical set/rep scheme for me. Then I did Glute Bridges, SLDL's, and Front Squats at 5 sets of 10. Then I crawled to my truck :D

Agreed. I think that the extremely heavy weights of leg day create a better hormonal response than heavy days of other bodyparts. And I am not man enough to do high volume leg training...no way.

I've done GVT. 10 sets of 10 squats is B R U T A L.

PS - does Undertow have anything to do with Tool?

Yeah Strong, I have done 10 x 10's and even 20's on squats because an insane partner of mine swore by em. I'm a puker. Couldn't handle it. And yeah big time Tool fan here. Getting a boner thinking about this years reported release.

Look up the Hilter video on the delay of the new Tool record. Funny stuff. Undertow is still one of my favortite go-to's while I'm at the gym.

I did gvt for a month and after 5. 10 x 10 squat and deadlift days my squat went from 425 to 485 and deads went from 475 to 525. One freaking month after months of stagnant gains...

But it is fucking brutal.

That's interesting because the only reason I would never give gvt a chance was the chance I may loose strength. Those are good gains you made.Ive read that gvt can give a fatburning effect as well. That lac-acid is a bitch.

Undertow are you increasing your volume by more frequency per week or doing more excercises and sets or all of the above?I havnt trained the ol Arnold style since my twentys.I remember seeing somewhere that Ronnie had trained everything twice per week with the right amount of volume adjusted back around his peak.

I'm a huge fan of Dorian/mentzer/ Arthur jones style workouts, and I routinely do them from time to time, the volume obviously burns cals and helps conditioning but when it comes to gains I gotta go with lower volume, high intensity. I'd also be doing those post cycle myself, but that's just me

I saw Ronnie do high volume training that would kill any mortal. Then again, I also saw him walk into the gym, bomb out ridiculously heavy deadlifts and leave. Nothing else, just that. Not sure what his process was on establishing a training protocol, but for the most part it was more of a powerlifting workout that I saw him go with. To answer your question ALL OF THE ABOVE. I have been hitting every body part 2x per week with higher sets and higher reps. It was tough to adjust to but my body loves it...for now.

That was always my bread and butter too man. My first mistress and I won't forget her. I think maybe I'm just responding well since it is pretty much a new process for my muscles to adapt to. I'm sure on my upcomming cycle that when the tren kicks in I will start using heavy ass weight again. Then again, I wonder how I would react to high volume on cycle? by the way, saw your rear lat spread in another thread. Your lookin sick man.
