Americans are being blamed for the increased use of steroids by soldiers in the British Army...

Soldiers have long needed to be super-fit. But in recent years a bodybuilding craze has swept through the British Army that is more about looks than effectiveness in battle. A worrying spread of illicit steroids, sports supplements and performance-enhancing drugs has followed in some military bases, a culture in part adopted from the US troops we have shared camps with for more than a decade...

Sharing military bases with the Americans (who are said to be the biggest anabolic steroid users in the world with several doping scandals reported in their infantry) has helped promote both a culture and availability of performance-enhancing drugs in the British Army.

Also, the British Army encourages risk-taking and actively recruits risk-taking. But using steroids is just way too risky; steroids, even though they are enhancing performance, are just as bad as recreational drugs according to the Army:

“Clearly in some parts of the Army there appears to be an increased use of steroids,” says Brigadier John Donnelly, director of personal services. “We put warnings on a regular basis reminding people about the dangers because they have significant physical and psychological side effects that are incompatible with military service. As drugs go, they are every bit as bad as recreational drugs.

“We also remind people on a regular basis that you don’t need to take supplements. But you can only go so far. We recruit risk takers. That is what being a soldier is about.”
