Berman Introduces Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Howard L. Berman, House Judiciary Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-Wisc.), Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr (D-Mich), Rep. John E. Sweeney (R-NY), and Rep. Tom Osborne (R-Neb.) today introduced the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004 which would update the list of illegal dangerous substances being marketed as performance enhancers and increase the penalties for those who traffic these substances within 1,000 feet of a sports facility.

Recently, the problem of steroid abuse has gotten new attention because there are indications that high profile athletes in professional sports have widely used steroids. Currently, criminal investigations are active in this area. I am hopeful that these criminal investigations will draw attention to the perils of steroid use and discourage the use of steroids in the next generation of athletes.

Sadly, the almost irresistible lure of easy stardom and fast money glamorizes and encourages use of these substances in professional sports. Steroids can seem necessary to compete at the highest levels, and the quick rewards can outweigh the long term consequences to the users health. Unfortunately, this throw away your future message is reaching down to college and high school athletes. Some evidence suggests it is even starting to trickle down to the middle schools. The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimated in 1999 that 2.7% of 8th and 10th graders and 2.9% of 12th graders had taken anabolic steroids at least once in their lives.

As quickly as we can outlaw one of these substances, the ugly profiteers and phony dream merchants who traffic in these substances have concocted new substances that are not illegal substances but which provide the same effects. I and my colleagues want to protect our young athletes and encourage them to rely on their own abilities rather than on artificial substances. As a result, we must continuously monitor the substances that are being offered to enhance performance.

The legislation introduced today is a product of hard work and cooperation with Reps. Sensenbrenner, Conyers, Sweeney, and Osborne and is a first step in that effort. It updates the list of illegal dangerous substances being marketed as performance enhancers and increases the potential penalties for those who traffic them within 1000 feet of a sports facility. It will send a clear message to those who would seek to exploit athletes: get out of the sports world now or go to jail.

Complete bullshit and they want to ban much more than you may think.
Also this whole Balco Labs investigation is turning into a freaking joke. Competitors were handed supeonas(sp) at the Arnold Classic!
This reminds me of McCarthy's witch hunt of suspected communists!

What a wonderful reason to increase penalties.

John McCain was on one of the morning shows today talking about "the physical and mental negative" effects of steroids. What a fuckhead.

Maybe the govt should stay out of sports and let the NFL etc solve their own problems. So much for a representative gov't.

The government's ignorance will never cease to amaze me. About the "1000 ft from a sports facility law"...that's ok, they'll just go 1100 ft away.

Yeah, we need to get tougher on the steroid "problem" since so many people are dropping like flies, far exceeding alcohol and smoking-related deaths.

Just think of what 1000 feet from a sporting facility covers! Between that and within 1k feet of a school and in almost any city you are probably 80%+ within that zone.

Any little league baseball field, softball field, the town soccer fields, outdoor basketball courts would likely all count as sporting facilities. It would surprise me if they include golf courses too. And who the hell can get more than 1k feet from a golf course!

It's disgusting! But they just want to CONTROL us...I mean protect us right?

This is why I hate politicians. I'm in my 40's, I do what I do to stay in shape and I'm better now than when I was in my mid 20's.

Maybe I should become a fat lazy fuck and eat Mc donalds 4 times a day then they will give me a tax write off to get back in shape.
Stay out of my personal life and focus on the REAL problems we have in this country.......11

Of course! They are only looking out for u....I mean, their careers.

Limits on free speech on the radio, wrongly classifiying AAS, getting involved in the sports business, and the list goes on and on.

DAMMIT! WHY CANT A LIBERTARIAN HAVE A CHANCE AT WINNING!!

The only thing you are truely free to do in this country is make money.
New legislature only takes away more personal freedoms not giving any back.
You dont realize it till you visit some other countrys and see people drinking a beer on the street or fishing without a license or getting a blowjob from a hooker.

Ironically enough, he had so many allegations of rampant steroid use on the football teams he coached. I think one of the biggest AAS busts was associated with alleged supliers of NU athletes.

I'm not sure that I can classify poverty as a problem. In the vast majority of cases, it's the impoverished people's own fault their poor. Perhaps, if they got a job....

With that said, it does seem to make more sense to spend the billions of dollars we give to other poor/starving people in other countries to our own people.

Everyone bitches that the US is so evil, yet we give more money to foreign countries than any other country! When something goes wrong somewhere in the world, who gets the call? The US!

I say screw the free handouts and spend part of that money on getting more teachers in public schools. End the "war on drugs" and give us our freedoms back, some taxes back and improve our failing school system.

Grizz, good point about the majority of poor people. There is no lack of jobs for these people.
