Anyone Ever Train A 13 Year Old.

Can't think of any more advice for that. I just remember loving doing pushups and twist crunches every night before bed. Then i bought dumbells and started doing bicep curls and hammer curls. Then i learnt how to work triceps with them, then i started doing medial and lateral shoulder raises.

Also loved how i could create that mind-muscle connection to be able to flex just that muscle.

Keep it simple!

I started my kids and grandkids with the basic 5x5. Threw in some curls and bicep work along with a little ab work, as well. Kids love to see/feel the pump. Their cardio was always good as they were and are in sports. Looked for form on the basic compund lifts before moving them along with more movements. It also gave me a guage of their interest and commitment. Make it fun, but realistic and even though not all of them kept up with it, it was a rewarding time for me and hope it was/is for them.

one of my clients is an 8th grader..kid has lost 25 lbs and is now playing football cuz of me. ive officially entrenched him in the fitness lifestyle. his mom loves me and thanks me everytime i train him saying michael has never looked so good and been in such a good mood. not to mention hes gonna slay mad bitches in HS next year cuz the kid is a lil don. deep ass voice with slicked back hair and ive been peppering in the life lessons during our training. its a great experience for both of us

Rippetoe has trained lots of kids.

Basically once they are Tanner Stage 4 they are ready to train hard. Prior to that he generally doesn't recommend full weight loading.

Edit: He may actually show up and yell at me for phrasing it that simply (like invoking the Candyman).

Risk I am willing to take.

A woman at the gym wants me to train her 13 year old son. More of a big brother type thing. Her husband was killed in an accident and she wants to keep him motivated. I just don't want to give the kid any more problems from working out wrong. I think he is a little young for gear so I will keep him natty for at least another year(<--that's a joke). I know the kid needs time with someone who shows interest in him more then anything, but if he is going to put the time in it might as well be worth while. Is there dangers that should be avoided? I don't want him to deform his growing body in any way.
you should tap that. She is obviously testing you as dad material... this is your ring of fire brother. go through it and you'll get to the holes

The mother trusting you to mentor her son shows just how much of a good man you are in your community (and jacked ;)) Rocco, respect for that. It's also very kind of you to accept such responsibility and your willingness to help out her fatherless son.

As for the training itself, in college we learned about special populations and how training for them is different from normal folks; however, kids his age weren't really considered a special population. As such, I wouldn't worry about it much as long as the kid is healthy and has no related medical history issues. Like few have already said here, form is everything especially at his age because he'll grow up doing what you'll teach him now.

For the program in general though, and depending on his conditioning, you can either start him off with simple conditioning and/or slowly ease him into hypertrophy training for the rest of the year (a few breaks here and there). Beginners can benefit from this simple training because it's stimulating enough to cause adaptation response in the body for them.

I'll be more than happy to help out as much as possible with any more questions you got!

I guess you studied mentally or physically challenged people? Maybe you can help me, I'm a little of both.

The kids mother has been into fitness for years and has her routine down perfect. Problem is she is a mother hen and the poor kid is going to look like a bikini model if she keeps him on her routine and doesn't give him some space.

My goodness, we have some DOGS on this thread! Man trying to help the kid out and the first thing that comes to mind is tapping the mom! LOL!

Alright, true story...... knew a MARRIED guy distantly that started mentoring a boy about 10. I don't know why, the kid had a dad, but anyways he ends up tapping the mom - married to kid's dad, mom. Result? An affair that lasted about 2 months and concluded with a positive pregnancy test. Two divorces and an illegitimate child later the "mentor" is now married to the kid's mom.........unless they have already divorced. I haven't kept up.

Gets a little worse. The mentor had a smoking hot wife and a young son by her.

What a tangled web we weave....
