Yates Vs. Pendlay

A true Pendlay row you return the bar to the ground on every rep and pull explosively to chest. It's a good movement, but I am now incorporating both into my routine. I really get a good contraction of my lats doing the Yates style row so I added them. T-bar are great too but you can have variation in this exercise as well, parallel vs 45 degree angle. I will NEVER do Yates with the underhand grip because of the risk of a bicep tear.

I have been doing the Pendlay method for the 3 months now and am really liking it. Im doing a 5 by 5 with it and always start and finish sets with lighter weights and reps of 10-12.
Doing this with the same grip width as your bench press has good transfer over to when ur benching. I like to go a little narrower sometimes too depending on how you wanna hit the back.

5x5 is also when I changed over to Pendlay. And it was the first time I had ever set the weight back on the ground after each rep with bent rows. Because that's how the 5x5 routine says to do them so I tried it lifting explosively to the chest on each rep as well. It's a much different movement.

Ya thats when i first saw it that way too. I used to stand More like 45 degrees. My back has gotten much stronger faster since starting this. I like dojng this now because deadlifts work great for hitting the upper back and traps from that upright angle already.

I do my bent rows at near 90 degrees but never let the bar touch the ground, going instead for a good bottom stretch. I find I don't need to worry about how much weight when I can increase intensity by upping the time under load in either the positive or negative phase of the exercise. These days I focus more on working muscles than doing movements.

I like this advice!!

Why don't you pussies put some weight on the bar? 25's on each side! What the fuck is that? I rep out with 315 lbs.

I used to do 315 as well until I figured out I hit my lats much better when I did somewhere in the 225 to 275 range. You may well be able to 315 and hit your lats effectively for me it proved more beneficial keeping my ego in check and going a bit lighter.
