Calorie deficit - is there a best number ?

So pretty much asking let’s say you are cutting and don’t follow strict deficits daily, 2-3 days is 600-700 deficit and 4 days are 1000 etc. Why do I find sometimes on the lesser deficit I’ll wake up next day lighter than when on a higher deficit ? Is it because the body goes into starvation mode? I don’t think there’s a factual answer but seeing if anyone knows the science behind the best calorie deficit to lose the most weight daily ?

Putting daily exercise, activity etc. pretty dam close every day too before someone suggests that.

300-500

If 300 calorie deficit then add cardio. If 500 calorie deficit no cardio.
Appreciate the response but not what I was really looking for sir. When I cut, cut, not miss one shake or miss 5 eggs.

Looking for reasoning on this example :

Why would I be lighter if my days were identical but the one day I cut 1100 cals - I was 1lb lighter next morning and the other day cut 750 cals and was 2lbs lighter next morning?

Cutting is never linear day to day, and, in fact, trying to make sense out of what happens one day as opposed to another is kind of retarded.

One week trends or so is about the shortest time period that makes any sense.

I know you will think that I did not answer your question, but I did.

Fat loss on one day is too small to show up on your scale. You are measuring water differences on a day to day basis, which is influenced by more than what you think your calorie cut below maintenance was.

Hmmm … you def didn’t answer my question because no where in my post at all did I say fat loss?

Everything identical on a day to day basis, that would mean water as well.

Scale weight not fat loss !!!

And to your first post, You’re the only person on this forum that competed 10 years ago and thinks they have all the answers all the time.

Weight cutting is different than fat loss.

Man, this has drove me crazy over the past few years. I assume it is due to water weight fluctuations. Example, the day before yesterday I ate 800 calories in deficit and yesterday morning I weighed 210. Yesterday I ate 500 calories in deficit and this morning I weighed 204. I have started to do what @malfeasance said and look at one week trends. Also, the fact we are on drugs, turns the scale into a lying slut. I will loose absolutely 0 weight for a month, while on a deficit, yet my abs start showing and veins start popping.
