Dana White More Worried About Marijuana Than Steroids in MMA

Steroid News

News bot on steroids
Dana White, the outspoken President of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is more worried about mixed martial artists testing positive for marijuana than he is about anabolic steroids. In most anti-doping programs, the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) and recreational drugs result in the same penalties e.g. suspension from competition. “Forget about PEDs,” White said. “If…

I really don't know about UFC fighters....I trained w/ many MMA pros but most were not good enough for the UFC. In any event, none that I knew of were pot smokers. I would think at the higher level there would be less, not more pot heads.

Actually I did roll against a pot head once. I was visiting my then fiance in Manteca (not far from Stockton) and one of the Camarrillo brothers were teaching a BJJ class went to. I was a freshley minted Renzo Gracie blue belt.

I weighed about 225 lbs, and I rolled against this skinny little white belt.....and I could not tap him out. He told me that he was going to be a professional MMA. I said "sure kid." As I had heard about a million guys make that claim.

Well, it turned out that that skinny kid was Nick Diaz.

I think he was just trying to create a distraction away from steroids

Possibly....of course everyone knows about the Diaz brother use. I had an old training partner that taught for Randy Couture and he never mentioned anything like that.

Then again, some people knew that I was a pot head until 15.5 years ago, and maybe they just didn't want to discuss the matter w/ a teetotaler..

As much as I don't like Dana, he's a smart guy and most of what he says has a purpose even if he knows its not true. I think he's OK with his guys juicing for the same reasons baseball looked the other way, its good for the sport and fans want to see superheroes.
I still don't know what to think, part of me still likens it to putting plaster in your gloves...... Bigger stronger = harder hits to the head, and everything that goes with that.

Pericles what are your thoughts on it as someone who has competed in combat sports?

i very much doubt these athletes are using rec's tbh. the ave. gym rat couldnt maintain a decent training schedule and use rec's, never mind a world class fighter. Dana is spouting a little bit of crap there and prob didnt think before he spoke. if its a diversion he wanted to create, then its one out of the pan and into the fire.

pericles, combat sports?? lol, he used to say he was an enhanced competitive bb'er as well, yet had to ask how to compile a simple 12wk AAS cycle. i wouldnt read much into his trolling if i were you ;)

Her is my combat sport background: Instructor for a Renzo Gracie affiliated school. I would teach classes on the weekend while Jay White would drive down to train w/Renzo every Saturday. I coached Jay for his # 1 placing in the Pan American games, at the blue belt and purple belt division. I received a blue from Renzo the first time he saw me roll. I trained regularly (3 times a week) for 3 for 3 years after getting the blue, and w/ all due modesty would have gotten my purple if I was training w/ Renzo. I also hold a Black belt in Japanese JJ.

During that time, I won the Intermediate division NY State JJ tourney, the Renzo Gracie Classic and took 2nd in the Advanced Division Of the NY States' Grapplers Challenge. In that tourney I broke my leg yet submitted my opponent. I fought in the finals on a broken leg and lost for my first time, since high school, were I wrestled Varsity for 3 years. I was ranked 5th in the Country by the North American Grapplers Association. I took challenge matches at my school and had the whole left side of my face broken (have 2 steel plates to show for it) by a guy I submitted even w/ my face caved in.

I also trained at a Rickson Gracie school, and w/ Ralph Gracie.

For striking, my primary boxing coach was Peter Allendo, He was trained by Cus DaMatto, Mike Tyson's coach. In fact Peter used to steal Mikes cookies. I also trained in Kyokushin Karate (very hard core 18th Century Japan style Karate....not the watered down version of 99% of schools) w/ ShidoKan champ Matt Ives.

I trained briefly in MT w/ Kru Prong, and also in San Shou (which is really kickboxing w/ wrestling takedowns) w/ Mike Altman. Mike was #2 in the world, losing to Cung Le in both San Shou and then in an MMA fight I helped him get ready for.

I was still teaching BJJ up until 8 months ago which I cannot do anymore due to my work schedule. I still hit the bags 3 times a week.

I don't mean to brag, but yes, I am both a BB champion and an MA champion.

What are your achievements, Mac?

That is me in my avatar, genius. The pic is way off to the side, but I think it speaks to my bodybuilding achievements. It was a National qualifier, in fact the 4th place guy (who admittedly was not in his best shape) placed 7th at Nationals.

It seems that you are going to go back to the behavior that got you banned in the 1st place

Well, I only know one UFC fighter from my neck of the woods, and he definitely blows trees from time to time. I wouldn't be surprised if it's widespread, but I can't speak about anyone else.

I think it would be very hard to make weight if one were smoking pot. Fighters walk around at 20 or more lbs than what they weigh in at. This number (lbs) is even larger if they weigh in on Friday and fight Saturday.

BTW, I apologize for my above ^ posts. Mac got me a bit worked up. One important thing is I never had a professional fight. IMO, it is actually scarier to fight as an MMA pro than a street fight (which I had many before I quit drinking). I cornered Jay a couple of times, and ring/cages are elevated and the crowd has been drinking in many cases. It is very intimidating.

One thing I should also point out is the fact that I trained w / many, many pro's, and I can honestly say that if I fought professionally, I would have been a 500 fighter (IE lose as many as won). Even at lower levels, pro MMA athletes are seriously bad ass, Most were champions either in striking or grappling. The challenge for most is the ability to learn a whole "nuther art. Carlos Gracie said "if you punch a BJJ black belt in the face, he becomes a brown belt, punched again, a purple, then blue than white".

Today, successful MMA athletes most become good in an area that is totally foreign.

Not necessarily, THC has no direct effect on weight that I know of. It can certainly affect appetite, but as you say, these guys are used watching their weight obsessively. So I doubt they're overeating much. Also, I doubt they're smoking much leading up to a fight, but that night they win, well that's a different story.

Joe,

As a former pot smoker (15.5 years clean and sober) I can tell you that pot makes most people voracious eaters. THC has an indirect, but very important effect on weight.

As a current one myself, it has little effect on my appetite. Now it does suppress the "full" feeling. So if I want to eat two monster burgers from hardee's and a tub of ice cream, I can. However, I'm in full control of how much I eat and what exactly I eat, sober or otherwise. I think that THC's effect on appetite is more varied. I have friends that can't smoke and not eat, but I also know fitness trainers who smoke more than me and have no problem maintaining 5-10% bodyfat. It comes down to choice. Similarly, an MMA fighter knows what he can eat regardless of how he relaxes.

It has been my experience that people addicted to Marijuana end up living in their parents' basement, not fighting in the worlds most prestigious MMA production.
