want to lose abdominal fat, get smater and live longer? new research led by usc's valter longo shows that periodically adopting a diet that mimics the effects of fasting may yield a wide range of health benefits.
in this study, the subjects calorie intake was slashed to 35-54% of normal for 5 days.

and one of the first things I thought of was this study, because ive read through this site a couple times. ergo-log.com/leanmassfasting.html
in this study, done with rats, two groups were put on a diet to lose 23% of their bodyweight. one group was fed at 40% of their normal intake. the other group was fasted. both fat and muscle loss were almost identical. they were then allowed to "refeed". the 40% group regained 60% of the fat and 64% of the protein (muscle). the fasted group regained 57% of the muscle but just 11% of the fat. leading the author of this article to conclude "during recovery after a long period on a calorie restricted diet, the body gives priority to building up the fat reserves, but after a fasting period its the proteins that are attended to first. so once athletes start to eat normally again after a short fasting period, it looks like they'll start by building up more muscle protein. now that's what we call a win-win situation."
an even bigger win because more evidence seems to be coming out about the overall benefits of fasting, including intermittent fasting.
I did a 3 day fast after reading this. its not the first time, and wont be the last. im a little apprehensive about going much further though. but the biggest hurdle to overcome is in your head, not your stomach. and at the end of 3 days I feel really good. a little lighter on the feet, clear minded and focused. almost as if my senses were heightened, "naturally". in the week after, the body looks noticeably leaner but strength and muscle remains the same. for me this is something I will continue to do.
I wonder though if anyone else would even try fasting. and why not.

I have noticed great results using intermittent fasting while cutting/recomp type intake. I can't say it was necessarily better than a typical caloric deficit without an eating window. But getting past that brain fog and hunger, I find that I perform better being fasted.

I believe I read that low-calorie intake is tied with slower aging in rats, which might or might not correlate to humans.

Bump to this thread. I have read a lot about a 7 day fast and how you can lose over 1lb of fat a day while retaining most of your muscle. If you were on AAS during a 7 day fast you might even keep all your muscle. Has anyone on Meso done a 7 day fast?
Seven Day Fast – Before and After Pictures

close but no cigar, but ive never tried for 7 days. 3 days is much more manageable and can be done more often. I would also take the opportunity to "refeed" in the next couple of days before going back to maintenance.

interesting link btw :).
