Do those urine strips work.

At the health food stores, they sell urine strips, that supposly measure "ketones" in your urine, and the strip will turn a certain color if ketones are present. It goes on to say that when your body is motabolizing fat, it releases ketones.

So are they BS, or work

They are correct but only if you have put yourself into Ketosis. I assume you have never done a no-carb diet and pushed yourself into ketosis (not fun). The strips only read well when large amounts of ketones are present... otherwise the strips are useless to the average healthy person unless extreme dieting.
 
well, im on a reduced carb diet, and 2 weeks ago before my diet the strips said i wasnt producing ketones, now the strip is showing i am, its stays white when you arent, and goes pink when oyu are. today it was a dark pink.

could i be in ketosis
 
dont store them where light can get to them, or you will have false readings. for the best reading, do an am first-void test.

i dont like this diet period...forcing the body into ketosis where large amounts of ketones accumulate in the blood stream for long periods of time is not healthy, not to mention a lot of the weight first loss is water, so make sure you stay hydrated well so you dont become dehydrated.

i could go on and on about this diet, but do some research on ketosis from some rep. sources.

Acutally pump, the research behind low ot no carb induced ketosis is quite impressive. It backs both the saftey and effective power of the diet. It is only now after 30 years that Atkins got recognition for what he knew years ago because the science is finally there to prove it.
 
I just started my zero carb diet yesterday. I'll post anything notable if it happens. I want to get to 10% BF for the summer.

They work. Just get some baby wipes while you're at the drug store too... to wipe the pee from your fingers when you're done.

accually this diet has been around since the 1920's or 30's. yes you will lose wait, and lose it fast if you stay on it. ketosis is a natural process, but when its self induced is where the problem comes from. long term induced ketosis has shown that it causes heart and liver problems in rats. the diet has also got a horrible rebound problem. after depleating the body of carbs for long periods, when carbs are returned to the system post diet, the body wants to store these as gylcogen, and a decrease in metabolism. the total success of post-dieting from this has also shown to be a failure for most.

i also have a problem with the fat intake. yes this diet may lower triglycerides, but there are a lot of bad fats in this diet. though this was not the reason for heart problems in the test rats. im not going to try to explain why the heart problems because it would take to long.

the body was made to have a proportional amount of macronutrients based on activity. therefore i totally believe in long term lifestyle changes.

for a healthy life, i will always suggest proper diet, and moderate excercise.




now i am doing something right now that would make me a "hippo"crit. DNP

but this is not because im trying to take a short cut. ive hit a plateu in my bf, and what im doing is not healthy either, but i did reseach what im doing, and made my choice. it may prove to be a bad choice, but it was made after research, and not what the guy at the gym said.


i know im going to get flamed for this post, but oh well...these are just my opinions.
