Do u need squats

Unfortunately all I have access to is a smith machine, but I still get my squats in. Feet close together, 15-20 reps for 5-6 sets. Works my quads like no other. I would definitely prefer having access to a legit squat rack though.

Whats the opinion on squats after lateral meniscus removal? Doctor says not to squat ever again. I found that odd advice for an athlete who has been cleared to return to competition. Im asking for a college athlete who just had knee surgery, not myself.

My quads have exploded since I started doing 3 x 8-10 front squats after my deadlifts.

Even if you go fairly light and just hammer out reps, nothing even comes close to the squat and its variations, IMO. People think that leg press is a "safe" alternative, but it actually concentrates a huge amount of pressure on your lower back. It also contributes way less to building core strength.
This thread made me want to go add squats in on a lighter weight which I think I’ll try today.
I think leg press is actually extremely dangerous. Especially as someone who had back surgery at 17. People that load up 8 plates on each side are just kinda asking for a silent injury.

Squats are prefered but are not needed. Now that I have strayed away from my 'ole strength training habits and hence squats in an extent (still do them but not a priority as a lift overall). I have found that other movements, like dumbbell walking lunges for example, work my legs way better than squats, maybe it's because that's a new movement for me but still.

Unless you are a powerlifter 315 is plenty of weight till you can do 3 sets of 10 with it. Do a few AMRAP sets with 315 YEA PAIN

Can’t stand when im at the gym and I hear young guys saying “i hate leg day” I feel like saying yeah, try leg day when the old ostio starts settling in your knee. I used to enjoy leg day...20 years ago. Was never really powerful with squats, never went above 315 for 3 but I always got good development. Now leg day=pain but I frigin refuse to not train legs. I do exactly as said by @T-Bagger , extensions, curls, leg press. I still do plenty of calf work too, that helps a lot with the “look” of your legs. Ever see a big dude with skinny or even normal size legs lol, I always said I would NEVER be that guy. Lmao.
