I looked into the harnesses after seeing your post. Definitely a game changer.
Fortunately I’m not at that point yet where I have to give up squats, but it sucks knowing you only have a few years left when you hear the joints creaking and have to adjust your stance to stop the pain. At my gym, we have a lie down leg press, which actually simulates a squat pretty well. I have felt almost all of the same muscles worked on it as I have squats. Can’t stand when im at the gym and I hear young guys saying “i hate leg day” I feel like saying yeah, try leg day when the old ostio starts settling in your knee. I used to enjoy leg day...20 years ago. Was never really powerful with squats, never went above 315 for 3 but I always got good development. Now leg day=pain but I frigin refuse to not train legs. I do exactly as said by @T-Bagger , extensions, curls, leg press. I still do plenty of calf work too, that helps a lot with the “look” of your legs. Ever see a big dude with skinny or even normal size legs lol, I always said I would NEVER be that guy. Lmao.

Thanks for sharing that. I love front squats, but the bar rolls off my shoulders. Gonna pick on up too. It's worth the price. Made some nice progress this year with it.

I have about 10-15 racks in my gym and some of the shit I see is mind bogglinfI like these now, but 2 years no squat rack in the gym, coming back to it is like fuck
I have about 10-15 racks in my gym and some of the shit I see is mind bogglinfyou’re probably going to a HUGE change in your legs pretty quickly adding in a squat though.
Very much agree with nothing coming close to squats and its variations. My quads have exploded since I started doing 3 x 8-10 front squats after my deadlifts.
Even if you go fairly light and just hammer out reps, nothing even comes close to the squat and its variations, IMO. People think that leg press is a "safe" alternative, but it actually concentrates a huge amount of pressure on your lower back. It also contributes way less to building core strength.
I have 3 rods in my rt femur/hip, a rt knee replacement, and about 15 screws, pins, plates in my left foot. I just started squatting again because the leg press actually bothered my foot way more.I feel like the squat movement itself stimulates/recruits all the muscle fibers in the quads very well. You dont have to do very much weight at all, just a load that you can fail around 15-18 reps. Do about 4 sets and Then, go do leg press and feel the significant difference in how your muscle burns at the end of a set. You will be wobbling out if the gym like I just did...
I have 10 screws in my right knee/tibia from an accident 4 yrs ago, and know about osteo knee pain and it fuckin blows big time. Leg press was my go to for 3 yrs but when the knee healed up I went to lighter squats and my one chicken leg inflated back to size. Forget heavy weights, none of the pros at my gym ever fuck with heavy anything anymore, and they look great. You dont need heavy weights for anything to grow, just good tension and strong mind/muscle connection. Goes for calves too
