So I got into a car accident (lousy bitch was playing with her phone or something and rear ended me - luckily it was in a traffic jam so she couldn't get past 25 MPH). The accident fucked up my lower back - doc is betting her license that its a herniated disc. 65% loss of strength in one leg (where I used to do 100 pounds on this one leg with the leg extension machine, I now do 35...barely).
Doc sends me to get XRays done. they do 35 images, all from different angles and positions and shit. Doc looks at them over and over.. turns to me and asks "How many decades have you been lifting heavy?" I am like... "more like 2 years doc. Does this body look like decades of work?" so she looks back at the xRay.. then back at me "Were you ever really obese, like 250, 300 pounds?" I was like "god, no. Heaviest I have ever been was 190" (I'm only 5'7)
She says "well, you have moderate to severe advanced degenerative osteoarthritis on nearly every section in your spine. No matter what, you can never squat or deadlift with weight again, or you could destroy your back"
I'm totally bummed. Squating was my favorite exercise of all. To be honest, I don't know if I should believe her - I am thinking about getting another opinion, and getting an MRI done. My back has always been a little painful if I lay on it too long (like 8 hours of sleep in the same position) or keep it bent too long (sitting cross legged on the floor putting together toys for the kids) but I thought that was same with everyone.
In any case... any advice/alternate lifts you could recommend that would accomplish the same muscle activation as a squat and deadlift??
