Fluoroquinolone

Yesterday I did my phys. therapy and came home and did more exercises. I also spent about an hour rolling out my plantar fascia with a golf ball under my foot. Holy F*&# are the bottom of my feet sore today!!! In a good way though! This is something I am going to continue to do while at work - just roll a golf ball under my feet to break up scar tissue and massage/stretch that fascia.

Other than that I didn't have one snap, crackle, or pop out of bed this morning. Zero pain in the shower. My body seems to be recovering in HUGE leaps and bounds.

One downside: I am suffering from some pretty bad dry eye, which is supposed to be a quinolone side effect. Hopefully it fades soon. Right now I am just using some OTC drops but if it gets much worse I may have to go to the doctor. It is likely that hte dry weather is not helping.

So, I've had really bad sinus pain/pressure for months now alongside a boatload of other symptoms, but have just stuck it out. Well, Friday night when I cleared my throat and spit, I saw blood in my saliva, so I decided I had to go to the doctor. They stated that it was sinus drainage containing blood and traveling down to my throat and not GI bleeding since I wasn't coughing up blood, my feces weren't black and very foul smelling, ect.

Anyway, I am now concerned with the symptoms I have spoke about regarding in this thread provided below, since the doctor prescribed a week of Cipro @ 500mg taken twice daily...

...So, I was wanting to ask, should I be? I plan to not change my training protocol, but stretch my calves daily plus stretch & massage my plantar fascia. Plz let me know if there is something I should include, omit, and/or replace, thanks! :)

Have you started the Cipro yet?

Yes, Sir, I took my first pill about 2 hours ago.

I would advise you not to take the medication at all, but that's just me. You will probably be fine taking it, but if you notice any unusual side effects discontinue the medication immediately. Did he give you anything else to take with it?

No, but I am thinking about purchasing some Sinus Buster to take with it though. Thanks for your information! Do you recommend any massage/stretching/training I should do while taking it, because I heard eccentric types are the best for protective qualities regarding what we are discussing?

The NeilMed Sinus Rinse works real well to flush them out.

As for stretches - what happens is that in some people the quinolones literally cause cell death in the tendons. All the stretching in the world isn't going to prevent it.

I thought it would actually be due to weakening of the tendon, NOT actually cell death!! [}:)]

Could you post references that claim this plz, cuz I wud luv to read them?!

Apoptotic changes seen in tendon cells influenced by fluoroquinolone are
compacted material in the cell nucleus, apoptotic bodies and bleb formation
of
the cell membrane, and edematous cellular organelles. The matrix-degrading
proteolytic interface and cellular changes are believed to initiate
apoptosis,
tendon cell death-the final pathway and pathogenesis of
fluoroquinolone-induced
tendinopathy (Gold & Igra, 2003; Sendzik et al., 2005).

I'm thinking you found this text out of this journal review...

Pathogenesis of Tendon Rupture Secondary to Fluoroquinolone... : Orthopaedic Nursing

Or no?

So what are you thinking OhNoYo?

I stopped taking it so only took 1 pill, but have now noticed pain in back of my heel that has me extremely worried & anxious. I took the Cipro yesterday morning and am very weary if I should exercise or run on the treadmill today. Idk if its my mind playing games with me in regards to the pain I have been feeling in the bottom of my heels and now it is more prominent in my mind and I am starting to think its really bad in the back now, too!

Good decision. :)

Hopefully what you are feeling subsides. If it gets worse and/or spreads to other spots then...

Get another AB for your sinusitis. Doxy should work just fine.

I went to the gym tonight awhile bak to walk on the treadmill on an incline and felt pain, so I stopped... THIS IS SUCH BULLSHIT! I cud go bak to the doctor, but I know he's just gonna say rest for 1 month. So what am I supposed to do, rest for a month like sum fuk, and then when I'm cleared what happens if the pain comes back again 1st day bak, rest for 3months?!

Then what if the process repeats, rest it for 6months?!

I cud see if I had sepsis and he wud prescribe Cipro, but I had a gawddam sinus infection! Do doctors think every1 is sedentary fat saks of sht that don't exercise, so over-prescribing Cipro is OK w/o fear of tendon damage on top of docs being lazy and not trying to find out what an infection might be from since its such a board spectrum antibiotic?! This makes me SO MAD! I'm too scared to train now :( for fear I might rupture my Achilles tendon! [}:)]

Idk wat 2 do now. I guess perform stretches I found on the internet, buy some foot sole insoles, try to find Achilles tendon strap supports, and give it another go tomorrow... :(

Dude, have you seen any of the other websites yet? Tendon rupture is the least shit this stuff can do. If it doesn't permanently disable you - you are lucky.

If I were you I would stop all exercise for a week and then see how ya feel.

Surely there are better antibiotics for the prostate??? I dont know though. I did a round of Avelox last year when my Fall sinus infection that I have had annually for 10 years running JUST WOULD NOT FUCKING STOP. I went through a zpack and 10 days of Biaxin and nothing. It eased up and then developed into a nasty fucking bronchitis that would not quit. So finally I broke down an took the stuff. I was aware of the dangers, including CNS damage permanent.
I barely lasted 8 of the 10 days. By day 6 the tendons in my forearms were so sore upon waking, I could not believe it. Achillies were straigned badly too. I did not shit right for a month. But I can tell you this. It knocked that chest / sinus shit out so hard, that I am cured. I did not even get it thiis year for the first time in 10 years straigt.!! They are incredibly risky. Its no secret, except that your doc wont tell you. The risk has to outweight as usual. He would not have given me the quinolone if it were not for the above lengthy scenario. Yes your tendons are at severe risk now. AND EVEN MORESO due to your pre-existing condition I would say....

BBC3, did you train w/ weights or use the treadmill when you took ur Avelox, Sir? If so, how did they hold up and did they hurt & ache during training? If you didn't exercise though while taking Avelox, how long of a break did you take until you started working out and how did your tendons feel, Sir, in particular your Achilles tendon?

I only took one 500mg Cipro tablet and its already outa my system so tho aware of the other risks, I'm not worried about them b/c I haven't had any other symptoms.

I just hope my tendons hold up, cuz tendonitis I can deal with, but where I'm at in life right now, I cannot afford an Achilles tendon injury, as it is mandatory for me to be on my foot most of the day.

When did your tendons (Achilles in particular) start getting better after drug discontinuation and what exercises are you able to do now w/o worrying?

My tendons hurt immediately after ingestion, then got better, then a month afterwords I had my true "severe" reaction, with very bad tendonitis and a handful of other adverse reactions. I am 50+ days since my last quinolone and I still cannot train the way I want.
