nobody said they go to gay clubs to pick up straight women. it's a perk if anything lol. as @insaiyan93 pointed out, it's a safer and friendlier environment for them which makes it a more open event, usually. the obvious convo, from both sides, is the 'oh gosh, I'm not gay!' and it starts from there. it's not uncommon at all.

When I was 18 I started working out at a new gym owned by a couple big bodybuilders. I had a friend who was 22 at the time and worked out with this older guy. So I worked out with my buddy and this guy everyday. About 4 months later I find out that the new guy I had met was gay. Couldn't tell at all. He's as gay as they come but he's a big burly x-cop. When I was told he was gay the first thing that popped into my head was... "Wow. All those gay jokes I made." Turns out he didn't give a shit at all about the jokes.
He does talk to the hottest woman I have ever laid eyes on. Some of them are obsessed over the dude. Ten years later and we're still friends.
