Guns

Though i own many firearms and keep one close for home defense. If i hear something in the night i will more than likely pull my 7" combat knife and clear the rooms. The close proximity and possibility of being surprised or grabbed At Close Quarters, makes me feel good having a trusty blade in my hand to get it done

Semi auto pistol grip 12 gauge shotgun with 10 round mag is my choice for home defence there pretty cheap now adays get a extra mag an birdshot is less likely to kill ur neighbor or family in other room an I know people talk about birdshots stopping power but people feel pain unlike ballistic gel
Honestly friend i sincerely hope you change your position on using bird shot as a home defense tactic. I could post morbid terrible things of grotesque wounds but bird shot is an undesirable projectile for the job. They create very shallow wound channels that will not stop a determined intruder. Ive seen and have taken part in training direct center body mass wounds that did not and would not stop an enemy. Ive even heard of head shots not putting down enemies. This isnt Taken 3. Human bodies are pretty resilient. And its a terrible time to find that out just before everything goes black from several well placed birdshot shells that you thought would protect you and your family

While that is nice in theory... I would echo what @gr8whitetrukker has already said. Home defense situations (and any self defense situations) are complex already for a hyper-adrenalized defender.

As many things must be as simple to use, aim, and fire as humanly possible. Simple things become really difficult under stress even when practiced and incredibly more so when not practiced.

Most additions to a weapon (including things that lengthen the weapon and change the balance like silencers) just serve as further complications (feel free to argue about lasers here).

Keep it simple. The results of the sound of discharge simply aren't worth fiddling with for home defense unless you are contemplating opening fire with 8-inch field artillery.

What would a .357 do to disorient me when shooting in a hallway?

Hallway in the dark: you will contend with flash, noise, and felt concussion in addition to all the other things you normally have when firing in self defense indoors.

Without getting to far into how many of us are actually trained to use our weapons and how many of us are just waiting to put a hole in our foot.
If you are not comfortable with your home weapon of choice and have not logged tons of hours using that weapon . Then I would agree keep it simple.

A couple of you in this thread know what your talking about the rest of you
A good semi automatic rifle with detachable magazines is the preferred weapon for any fight, be it a firefight or home defense. A pistol is a weapon used for concealed carry or your primary has gone down for whatever reason, your primary weapon is a rifle.
Shotguns are for blowing locks and trench clearing. Infirior in every way to a rifle.
Revolvers are a novelty gun at this point, the myth that they are more reliable then a semiautomatic is just that a myth.
Capacity is king

I totally understand your point of view an agree with alot of what you said I don't know his situation like family in house or if he lives in a apartment building an I asumed this would be his first gun because its for home defence i have buck shot an 3 inch slugs in my 12 guage but that's what my wife will grab if something happens I'm a 7.62 man lol but I think that's intimidating to new owners so I didn't mention it

AR-15, if you aren’t confident in building your own(I highly recommend so you can make it to your preference) you can buy one from a dozen different companies. Bravo company makes an excellent one, PSA makes good ones that don’t cost a fortune. You can customize and AR to be any configuration you want.
If You prefer an AK47 try and find a MK90(Chinese) or something from the old Combloc countries(Bulgaria, Yugoslavia etc etc etc.
Both the AR and AK are really the only choices for a “fighting” rifle, you can go with an M14, Mini14, AUG or Tavor but then you run into parts availablity, magazine compatibility/availability etc etc etc. I don’t think just along the lines of home defense, I think long term.

Remember every bullet that leaves your muzzle is YOUR responsibility. And FMJ rounds fired at 3700 ft / sec can carry thru multiple targets and soft materials. Residential buildings are extremely soft targets. The risks should be obvious here. Your family. Your neighbors. Property. Unless your buying soft tips meant to expand(vast majority are NOT) then your opening yourself up for possible catastrophic collateral damage. Even then your dealing with a projectile traveling at thousands of ft / sec That is why the 12g loaded with buck is preferred in your home.

If your going to rely on a revolver for home defense or personal defense its best to use hollow points or even a semi wadcutter. That choice is up to you. But an FMJ round is not ideal for personal defense

The shotgun is NOT the preferred home defense weapon. Who is peddling this false information?
What are you going to do in your pajamas at 0300 in the dark with your 6 rounds ? Multiple home invaders that are also armed ? Everything you shoot in a modern house is going through walls, you should be shooting through said walls, this isn’t Hollywood where sheet rock stops bullets.

Im going to fire like an absolute gun crazed idiot in hoping and praying i strike my sleeping kids and maybe bonus points for killing the families pets. And if all goes right ill kill my neighbors while im at it. Think of it like a 2 fer. 1 bad guy + 1 neighbor= score. Then ill find myself going from home defense to manslaughter in the blink of an eye. And whats best? I will use a weapon that stands the very BEST chance of as much over penetration possible.

 I can see where this is going. You should be using the best tool that gives you the best chance at winning, you know because your life and possibly your family’s life. So your so highly trained you don’t know the layout of your home ? Or where your kids rooms are ?
You aren’t winning this argument dude, this subject is ALL I know. I spent a lifetime training and fighting with guns.

I cannot imagine anyone being in the clear using a silencer in home defense. Even if it was a righteous shot...

Peltor Sport Tactical electronic hearing protection. Blocks out gunshots, but will still let whispers through. If you are worried about your hearing in home defense... which should be your last concern... then get this.

The last thing you need is a pain in the ass attorney stating you used excessive force to defend your family.

Wait i didnt finish my story.
Then when the manslaughter charges come. And they will come.
It will come to light in court very easily i chose to fire thru walls w/o having eyes on my target in only the faintest of hopes my enemy is behind said walls. Which will be deemed reckless and added to the manslaughter charges. Then for a decade i will rot in a federal penitentiary. All the while creating the next series of training videos for LE and para military forces to scrutinize over what not to do. Your advice is what gets ppl in to trouble. The kind of advice that you find only in a steroid internet sub forum.

Boy i tell ya i wish SWAT trained to shoot thru walls indiscriminately when known friendly targets are in the vicinity. That would be some thing. It would make hostage rescue a thing of the past. Just send it and collect the bodies later. Oh well. Collateral damage
LMAO WTF IS THAT!!!

Your getting charged no matter what, you are going to jail that day no matter what, you will need an attorney no matter what. If your dead because you were frozen and didn’t fight, ran out of ammo because you chose a shotgun or something dumber you won’t need a lawyer. Nobody said going crazy and shooting indiscriminately, shows how immature and lacking in actual experience about this subject. You think you aren’t going to have to use suppressive fire to maybe save your child ? Or are you going to let them die because lawyers or neighbors.
Use your six round shotgun and have a shit mindset and you will lose 10/10 times.
