Hey BBC3!!

What gives? Pehaps that like will finally let everyone know what the infamous & ever ellusive "sachet" looks like.[:o)]

Did you stop to notice that the websitelogs your IP address and the state you live in and immediately broadcasts it on the list to the lower right. Not cool of you to send ANYONE there... That appears to be some serious intimidation tactics applied to all who visit the link.

.

Yeah I noticed... not cool at all... But at least they are telling you the know where you are as a heads up...

It isn't really uncommon...

Regardless, the point is clear. This is the next roundup, and the intent appears to be to deter the market side of the steroid economy.

I am still convinced that A-S was LE, on an ultra-highup level all along anyway...

This wasn't an AS Site I sent you to, it was S.B.C and he is a member here if you would like to ask him what that actually does.

Actually, it's a third-party tool - http://clustrmaps.com/en/index.htm

Webmasters generally use it to promote the popularity of their website(s) by showing how many visitors come to the site from around the world.

Most servers log ip addresses, so that's nothing new. All vbulletin and most other forums do this out of the box. It's one small step to connect ip addresses to physical location right down to city, zipcode, etc - just map ip address to a geolocation database like IP Address Geolocation to Identify Website Visitor's Geographical Location

There are also ways to hide your ip - use proxy, etc. - from servers/websites if you are so inclined.

Yea, I guess I am little bit of a tard there. Just still kinda creepy looking at that type data at a site doing that...:)

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but IF you're really concerned about privacy, take a look at the comments made by Google's CEO today. If I'm not mistaken, it seems he's suggesting that we relinquish all privacy to the government so that we can be protected from criminal evil-doers! Am I reading too much into this?

"If I look at enough of your messaging and your location, and use Artificial Intelligence," Schmidt said, "we can predict where you are going to go."

"Show us 14 photos of yourself and we can identify who you are. You think you don't have 14 photos of yourself on the internet? You've got Facebook photos! People will find it's very useful to have devices that remember what you want to do, because you forgot...But society isn't ready for questions that will be raised as result of user-generated content."

In addition to predicting personal behavior, diseases and other crises will become predictable as well, Schmidt said.

On the misuse of information for criminal or anti-social purposes:

"The only way to manage this is true transparency and no anonymity. In a world of asynchronous threats, it is too dangerous for there not to be some way to identify you. We need a [verified] name service for people. Governments will demand it."

Millard I just read the article and all I can say is that I feel as if more harm will come from it than good. Pretty scary stuff to say the least. Especially the "Governments will demand it" line.

Also, Did anyone else notice that Schmidt is wearing a vest?

Interesting comments posted below the article. See this:

1. the "governments will demand it" part i find interesting. is schmidt suggesting we should have an identity service controlled by the government? if so, two big thumbs down on that idea....

2. also "governments will demand it" seems like poor logic for doing anything. governments will also demand war and high taxes. perhaps we should start giving less of what government demands, not more. and of course, governments are supposed to be by the people (i know they are not but they are supposed to be), so perhaps schmidt should ask if that is what hte people want. as the CEO of a data mining company he should know better than anyone what the people actually want.....

3. true that people aren't ready and that crazy things can be done, but also true that defense solutions can be built. the way to beat all-capturing information services is through astute usage of disinformation. then the mass aggregator systems won't know what to believe.

Its the truth Millard, Google def. does NOT care about the people or what the people want. Companies only exist for one reason, and that is to gain revenue. Im sure that behind all the white collar smiles and press events, abuses will take place every day.

This was my favorite post:

"Does Schmidt really think he is some great philosopher or intellect of our present day?

Yes there is more and more data being generated by a variety of technology enabled sources every day.

And yes Google has access to ALOT of that data through their mass scale of infrastructure and success over the past decade or so.

What is misleading here is that he's saying the data is enabling these scary insights into who people are and to "predict where you are going to go." In other words, if people are providing the content, its okay to find out who they are and what they want!

But its NOT. There were lots of people before 2003 with 14 pictures of themselves on the internet. It was simply not possible [for any company like Google] at the time to extrapolate who the person was or to derive any sort of insight from an image on the web.

Only recent advances in computing power, the trivialization of storage cost, and new graphical analysis algorithms make this possible today on the scale we are referring to.

If it weren't for companies like Google spending incredible amounts of resources and PhD brains to identify who you are and what you want, then they wouldn't have these capabilities today.

Schmidt is the CEO of a very powerful beast and this is abuse of position. Google's profits are ~95% ad revenue, and advertising has been targeted, yet anonymous, until recently. Obviously the better the targeting, the more money Google can make. But the day they know your name, behaviors, financial history and preferences will be a scary day on so many levels. Do you really trust a private company with servers scattered around the globe and who's sole objective is to please shareholders?

We really need to question his motives when he's referring to advancing humanity - and think if these sacrifices are truly necessary to humans becoming more productive and content.

On another note: Google killed Wave today - a productivity, communication and collaboration enabler which could be seen as helping to "solve the world's problems." Guess there's no money in that!"

This is exactly what I have been saying. We are at the end of an ERA. We are really in the Second phase of internet evolution. One being the first days (compuserve, etc), Second up til now, Third - Welcome. The first and second phases could be equated to the telephone. Phase one you had to ring the operator to get a connection, but primitive and no one gave a shit. Phase two, was the days when you could call someone up at random (prank call) with no consequence. I can recall that even adults in marital affairs would call each other harrasing with hangups, etc, and you had to get an act of congress to trace the call. Now Phase three, we have moved to the "caller ID" stage with Internet. Except, way more data available when you place that call. In fact the list stays on the "phone" forever, and only continues to grow in size and detail. DOES ANYONE REALLY THINK IT IS GOING ELSEWHERE? Its basic evolution, only expedited by technology. You are already far from anonymous on the internet. Far indeed. It just seems to me (I have not read), that this would simply level the playing ground. The badguys always get the deal first. ANyone that wants it can already get anything on you. It would appear the only and obvious solution. Its ALREADY HERE. This is just the wakeup call. So for those of you who think you are safe here in some secret society........;) FYI, that goes for you guys just watching. So you might as well log in. JUST BE SURE TO ASK QUESTIONS, and DONT CONVICT YOURSELF. The point of the site is to educate. A question is not a conviction.:)
