Home Gyms

If you know me personally, you'd know I'm a huge advocate for home gyms. With my lifestyle, and extremely busy schedule from march-Jan every year, I NEED a way to get my lifts in when I'm having one of those days where making it to the gym just isn't happening.

Benefits of a home gym:

•No waiting for anything!
•Shirt off with chalk!
•Blast your own tunes instead of wearing earbuds. Let the sound that drives you be heard!!
•YOU control the hours!
•Pre heat post workout meal during the last set!! I bet I get 2 meals into me before most of you are even home from the gym ;)

Disadvantages:

•You'll never have a Golds Gym
•More beneficial to those with extensive knowledge of intuitive workouts.
•Can be very costly, but when you factor in gym membership costs, the gas you spend to get there and back all year, it may even out depending on your situation. Families benefit the most saving multiple memberships!

My equipment:

•AmStaff SD1050 Multi Squat Rack
•AmStaff TS010E Commercial bench
•AmStaff TT1002 Flat bench
•Approx 500lbs of Olympic Plates
•Northern Lights vertical plate tree
•VO3 Impulse series seated preacher
•2- 7' 45lb Olympic bars
•1- 4' 15lb Olympic straight bar
•1- 6' Olympic Bar
•2- 4' Olympic Ez Curl Bar ( Wide/Narrow )
•1 Olympic hammer curl bar
•Custom Floor gun rack for bars
•Northern Lights Vertical Dumbell Rack- holds 5lb-30lb rubber hex dumbbells
•Northern Lights 6' 2-Tier Dumbbell rack - hold 35lb-100lb rubber hex ( TKO Brand )
•Medicine Balls 3lbs-20lbs - racked vertically
•Double Barrel Land mine - have multiple grips and single hand "suitcase grip" for land mine that slides over the 2" piece of the bar with weights on top!
•Yukon Fitness "Chin-Dip-Leg Raise" captains station ( with push-up handles )
•Schwinn Exercise Bike
•Bosu ball
•Tons of foam rollers/Therapeutic items - all from Fitness Depot
3 48"x48" 1/8" frameless mirrors 34" up from the ground all around
•Canadian Tire special 1/2" grey textured foam interlocking floor ( works great!! Laid on top of Hardwood. )
•Few pix of Arnold to keep the blood pumpin' ;)

Soon to come :

•Plate loaded quad extension machine - if I can fit it
•Lat pulldown - plate loaded
•Upgraded surround sound
•100lb punching bag
•AmStaff Cable cross over ( 12' wide )

Anybody else have a home set up?

I'm always up for new cool innovative ways to incorporate
more/better/different equipment! I'm getting limited for space, but don't mind replacing existing equipment with more useful pieces! Captains station is gone soon.

Anybody want to come lift?? :p

I dream about these thingz. My old man always had equipment at our houses growing up. Never took advantage of it then cuz i was just a little kid but fuck would i love to have my own set up now.

I work out at home as well. As a matter of fact, I just added a cable crossover, pulldown machine to my collection. I get home at 7pm sometimes and can't drive across town to go to the gym. I've got music, my dog, and my wife/kids if I need a spot!

I can't get motivated to workout at home. I have a bench and a squat rack but I only use it in the summer months when my kids are off school. As much as I hate some of the people that go to the gym I still find myself getting motivated by killing it and having people mirin lol.

That's one thing I defientely forgot to add to the downsides, I think we can all agree that when girl are watchin, our bench goes up 40lbs naturally!!

Slowly building my home gym, so far so good. It's cold in the garage, and strangely, I really miss the mirrors in the gym. I didn't realize I'd miss watching my form and my pump.

I will eventually hang some drywall in my garage(on my to do list). And I've already found some acrylic mirrors I wanna hang up.

Aside from thst I have no complaints.

My neighbor and I set up a gym in his basement. Pretty basic; olympic bench & plates, dumbells from 15-65lbs, a bowflex machine, and a total gym with 200lbs steel weights. Want to add a Smith machine or at least a cage/rack for squats.

It's nice being able to get a workout in anytime I want one, but I do kinda miss the sheer variety of machines at the gym I used to go to. Can't get a lot of that in my basic gym.

Yes, it is a pain not having the variety. And to have that variety, you need the space and lots of $$ usually lol. You just have to make due with what you have. Ultimately, being able to do the big three; squat, deads and bench, that's the foundation to many good physiques. Not too often somebody will have a leg extension or lat pulldown in their arsenal; me including. But soon hopefully!

I have a squat rack and a bench in the garage with 450ish lbs of plates. And some dumbbell handles. When it was setup in the basement it was nice. Now it's in the garage and it's too hot 6 months of the year. I'm going to sell it all on Craigslist soon.

I prefer the gym.

I workout at home as well. In fact, I live in a high rise but on the main floor. So it doesn't matter when I am lifting heavy because no one is underneath us (just underground parking).

These are the main things I've collected. If I had more room I'd have more equipment. We also have a small gym on the main floor which has 3 cardio machines (bike, treadmill and elliptical) along with a universal machine. I use that for leg curls, extensions and cable work mainly.

My small collection...

- 600 lbs in Olympic plates,
- 7 foot bars
- 4 foot EZ Curl bar
- Body Solid Olympic Plate Stand
- Body Solid Bench
- Body Solid Squat Press/Bench Press
- Bowflex Selectech 1090's - 10-90 lbs
- Chin Up Bar
- 24" Plyo Box
- Lebert Bars
- Calve Raise Bar
- Exercise Bike
- Slam Balls 20 lbs, 35 lbs, 50 lbs
- Skilz Sliders
- Skilz Core Wheels
- Skilz AccuRoller
- Rumbler Roller and other foam rollers
- bunch of cable accessories
- Dip Belt for weighted dips / Chins
- Chains
- Various Resistance Bands

I also love being able to crank my own music and workout on my own schedule.

I also do the same as you OP. I start warming or cooking food before last sets are over. So nutrition timing can always be on point. No waiting to shower at the gym plus commute time back home (plus commute time there too).

I own my business and I am go go go daily. It's so nice to be able to time my workouts and meals in between the daily hustle.

We are looking at moving this fall into a house or townhouse which means I'll be able to expand my workout area and equipment.

Do you usually scope out offer up and let go for these or buy all brand new?

Nice variation. You're a fan of the Body Solid brand,eh?

If you have an extensive enough setup, the home lift will be very beneficial. Like I said in the OP, I'll be onto my second plate by the time you're home from the gym. I cant recall how many times I've been stuck in traffic after a lift, and all I wanted to do was EAT.

You also get the comfort of soft TP if you gotta shit rather than use the tree bark at the gym

Ya they have some nice equipment and a solid warranty. Most is lifetime warranty. The bench I have also allows for a number of attachments. The only one I've added so far is the leg extension / curl one.

Would love the room for a cable cross over machine and smith machine. Once we move in the fall maybe I'll start adding more things. Depends on the size of place we get.

Even with what I have I can do all the main lifts and prefer free weights to machines.
