How much could the average Gorilla lift?

Mark, you do raise some good points, your best point is "kodiak bear versus gorilla who can tell the outcome? I would bet even money on the gorilla, but the Kodiak bear is my sentimental favorite.

are you kiddin, as soon as that 10' 1500lb meat eater stood up that leaf eating gorilla would shit his fur.lol........11

we always used to talk about all this animal vs. animal stuff stuff at work. i loved it. the biggest argument is over a great white shark vs. a crocodile in an equal environment. i once read in Outdoor magazine, i think, where they explained how they were sick of getting these questions so they put together their own hypothetical tournament. i can't remember alot of their "competitors" but a polar bear ended up being the champ. i think there's a special on this stuff on the Discovery Channel next week actually.

The environment would be a huge difference maker. They need to throw the 6 toughest animals and mike tyson in a jungle and swamp cage and see who comes out alive. In the water my money is on the great white. On land I would go with a liger.

Ok, this is ridiculous. First, a gorilla is SEVERAL TIMES stronger than a human being, even with EQUAL muscle mass. Why? Because their muscle insertions are on different places on the bone, thus causing greater leverage. This is why small apes (chimps, etc.) are so freakishly strong. It has nothing to do with their swinging in trees. Even lab-raised apes are much stronger than a human pound for pound. As far as the strength of a gorilla, they could EASILY bench press 500lbs. Gorillas are known to carry other gorillas their own body weight under their own arm (like a loaf of bread). I dont know of any powerlifter who could easily carry another powerlifter long distances while holding him under his arm.

P.S. Now the kodiak bear versus gorilla thing has my brain going. Thinking about this matchup is stupid, but I cant stop doing it!

lol I'll agree with muscle insertion but muscle mass has everything to do with it. The average gorilla must have 3-4 times the muscle mass of a human and over half of that is upper body. I went to high school with a kid about 160 18-20% bf benched 425, set a national record, had some sort of disability in his legs, his wrists were prob bigger than his quads, this kid was all upper body, same concept with gorillas, to an extreme example I admit. If you believe gorillas are some much stronger than humans you must expect one to put up at least three grand. Pound for pound a gorilla might be a little bit stronger but like any problem there are many factors, for instance gorillas don't sit at home watching TV and eating mcdonalds.

Isn't it the liger that is very passive? I think the tigon is supposed to be the more vicious even though it's smaller. Wouldn't that make sense since the tigon is the offspring of a male tiger and female lion and those sexes are the more dangerous of their respective species? Of course I could be totally wrong...

I am just going by size. I have no idea on the agression of either. I saw a liger once and it was unbelievable. You very well could be right

Crazyness plays a big role in all this, too. :-) Are we talking about equally as crazy, for all animals, because you know a wolverine won't back down from a grizzly, but would probably get its ass kicked,if the Grizzly desided to call it's bluff. Sorry wrong post

Yes I have seen one up close. A beast of an animal. Until I saw one i had never heard of such a thing

This isnt even a debate about the gorilla. The gorillas muscle mass has little to do with his strength, it is all about muscle instertions and bone structure that create leverage. This isnt even a debate, its a proven fact. It doesnt have anything to do with McDonalds (gorillas have a VERY low protein intake BTW, being mostly herbivores). A gorilla is simply BUILT to be stronger than a human with equal muscle mass.

Also, what about the rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail? How would it do it this matchup?

it could kick mike tysons ass

I'm sure there is alot more to it than just the muscles. I heard a Gorilla can bench press about 1,200lbs. A Gorilla also doesn't have the mential blocks that we as humans do. The gorilla isn't going to question whether he CAN rip your arm from the shoulder,he'll just do it

i think that their strongest lift would probably be the deadlift.any gorilla can easily bang out a one-arm pullup like it's nothing.they've done it time and time again in exhibitions and studies as well.imagine how strong any of their pulling movements would be if they can easily do a one-handed pullup with no prior training, especially at their weight.

You're saying there's no relationship between a gorrilas muscle mass and it's strenght? You're funny. :)

pound for pound

If we are going to talk pound for pound with mass, weight, muscle then you are forgetting the impressive anaconda. I would say this is the strongest animal alive.
This thing has eaten camen, a form of a alligator if i am correct.

u could start a thread an anaconda vs and elephant
