How to train calves without torturing toes?

I do not know if this is what everyone experiences or applies only to me, but it is really difficult for me to do calf-raise because before my calves get enough exercises my toes give up due to excruciating pain. The pain often lingers for hours, which hinders my walking. And I honestly do not see the point of growing toe muscles - if anything I get worried I might injure my toes.

Calves have always been my weak point and I really want to improve them. Is there a way to train calf muscles without stressing toes too much?

It felt like doing it on the balls of feet did not stress the calves enough, and as with every exercise I have been trying to stretch as much as I can which tends to involve toes anyway. But clearly I have been wrong - I will check my foot positions and postures in my next workout. Thank you for the help, jaymaximus.

I used to get that achy feeling toward the toes, feels like a cramp almost? I would stop before my calves gave out due to it. It will go away, it stopped happening to me a long time ago.

Change foot position, seriously. You're going to have a hard time walking pretty soon if you do all of your calf work that way (and not in a good way either).

What J-Max said. If you use the balls of your feet on a squat machine and hold the calf contraction, doing very slow deliberate reps that shouldn't happen. Its your form and your body telling you you're doing it wrong

You're doing them wrong. Also, roll your foot around on a lacrosse ball for 5 mins a day to work those muscles loose.
