:"I GOT NEXT"::TEK's WINTER PHOTO LOG:

@romaleos I have an opportunity to get my USAw Level 1 cert next month. More pricey than I imagined, hope it's worth it. What can I expect?

It really depends who the instructor is. If it's a level 2/3 guy who has brought athletes to a regional level comp or above, then you should be in good hands.

It's not that pricy compared to the stupid Crossfit seminars. A little less info than a seminar put on by an elite athlete like Ferris, North, Klokov, Shankle, etc.

It will be more a safety orientation as well as a primer for teaching the basics to beginners and novice. If the class is small, they may have time to critique your form and technique.

The test at the end is easy. Most instructors give you the answers during the lecture portion.

IMHO a USAW cert carries a lot of weight. Olympic lifting is all the rage right now because of Crossfit. There is a renaissance happening right now and coaches/athletes are rediscovering the beauty and effectiveness of Olympic Weightlifting as a base to any training program.

Nice. He is one of the OG's. That could be a good or bad thing. No doubt he has a lot of knowledge and I've read his books.

Don't know if he has bought into a catapulting style or if he is keeping it old school triple extension jump. Would like to know his preference in style these days and methodology/philosophy of the second pull.

Please let us know how it goes.

@romaleos (or any other nut that does these :D)
Am I missing any pros/cons by using BB split squats and BB walking lunges interchangeably? I do split squats rarely and most often just alternate my walking lunges from DB farmers walk style to BB which actually seems to hit me a little different bc of hand position and weight distribution. I'm wondering if I'm missing out by skipping the true splits...my hips have always been a problem area for me and need constant upkeep to keep flexibility.

I think its great to alternate the exercises and you seem to be very active in other sports and activities too , this will build a completely strong body , fast twitch and slow twitch muscles get worked from different angles... I used to do squats one leg day then deadlifts on another leg day then leg presses on yet another leg day . This made me stronger ....

Soooo I gotta do em all eh :( figured as much.

If you are contemplating the efficacy of a BB versus DB during split squat or walking lunge exercise, then I would have to say it depends on the adaptation you intend to achieve.

For pure quad/hip development in the unilateral position, I would think there is no difference between using a BB, DB, weight vest, etc. Where you start to get differentiation is in the added core development that a BB on the shoulders would provide. I like to kick it up a notch and hold the BB overhead during walking lunges.

So if you like your existing core workout and the split jerk is not a staple lift in your training, then you can skip the BB. DB split squats/lunges are safer, easier to balance, saves your shoulders, and assists in development of grip strength.

Do what's best for you. You know your body the best.

More contemplating the exercise selection...

the question is do split squats open the hips more than walking lunges.
(similar movement but I don't feel like it's identical)

-I feel safer doing the walking lunges surprisingly because although there is that one moment on one foot, I can go deep and then pop out. I use more weight as well safely.

-When I do deep splits if I get off balance at all I will bail and the likelyhood of me getting injured either trying to correct and save it or bailing and catching my back leg under is high.

The more I talk out loud I beginning to wonder if it's a form issue...hmm. Maybe time to tape some shit again, sucks not having access to the other gym.
