I NEED SOME HELP

Okay... So I went to the gym maybe 30 mins ago just to get a pump. Stretched my shoulders/rotator cuffs. Got on flat bench warmed up with 135 for 20 reps. 185 for 12 reps. 225 for ten reps. Then I usually proceed with a drop set or some variation to get a nice pump going then move on to incline.

On my 8th rep on 225 I heard an audible pop/tear in my left pec and it did not feel good at all. The sound is stuck in my head because it was fuckin terrible.

My question is for those who have torn a pec did you know without a doubt that it was torn? I can slightly flex my chest without extreme pain and I can rotate my arm fine but something without a doubt happened and something is fucked. Just trying to figure out to what degree.

Any input is appreciated.

Stay off chest excercises for at least two weeks.. same thing happen to me.. you need to warm up longer and stay hydrated..
I’ve strained and pulled my pec before.. never tore one.. that’s even worse

I had a similiar “pop” 9 years ago on the flat bench.. I figured the same as you. .. a pec tear, as I felt it more in my chest.. MRI later showed it to be my rotator,, That sound will stick with you, as I still remember it like it was yesterday .

Yeah I definitely should have warmed up more. Usually I pull a bench over and do light incline cable flys to loosen up.

Yeah it was a terrible sound. Did you feel it in your shoulder immediately? Because at this moment I don't think it's my shoulder. It's more in the "shelf" area of the pec. Kinda under the armpit.

Just get an appointment man, why chance it?
Yeah I'm gonna call tomorrow. Just trying to gauge the severity. From what I've read is ice multiple times a day to keep the blood flow from moving to the location and inflaming it.

I'd skip the er and primary, and go directly to the ortho when shit like that happens. They'll know right away if you need an mri. The other route will just cost you more time and money. Hope it's a low grade sprain that heals up ricky tick. I feel for you mang

Keep an eye on it through the next day or two. Bruising is at a minimum a tear. I would keep it mobile but don’t load it.

As far as intermediate treatment; you don’t want to completely inhibit swelling. That is your body’s mechanism of beginning repair of the area. Ice is slowly becoming “out of date” for soft tissue treatment.

I tore 3 out of 4 of my rotator cuffs in my left shoulder.(Benching) 1 was full tear, in half. It sounded like 2 or 3 pops. My wife heard the first one. Shoulder, chest, back, and arm halfway down to elbow turned dark purple. I went to orthopedic doc and he thought I tore my pec but didnt. Had MRI to confirm tears. I've been using machines for presses since. I went back to orthopedics and he did the push tests. He could no longer push my hand in so he ordered another MRI. My full tear reattached/partially healed. He told me that I still cant bench though but my shoulder feels great!

Yeah that was the main reason for this post. I didn't want to go to a PC doctor just to be told to go somewhere else. Or if it's just a bad pulled muscle... But it was audible. Lol. I heard that shit.

Yeah this powerlifter at the gym said pretty much the same thing. Especially the bruising. He said when it's a tear basically all the blood goes or ends up there.

And the thing with the ice makes sense. I'll take it easy at work tomorrow and make a call to a doctor.

all of the soft tissue injuries I've had only "required" ice after a rehab session. Loved the GameReady unit my rehab place uses.

if it needs more than time you're going to need a specialist so skip the rest of the process. However, you may need to see a PC for a referral in person. I'm guessing that changes state by state? In MA I just go to the ortho and they take it from there, which may include getting a referral from my PCP and I just don't know that it happened.

Does your pec visually look different? I only ask because when i partially tore my pec the shelf had a noticeable bulge to it. And whenever I'd try to flex or stretch it the pec would go into painful spasms.
As icky said I'd check out an ortho and wouldn't think of doing chest before being examined by a doc.
Hope it's nothing serious.

No doesn't look different. No indention or bulge or soft spots. No spasms when I flex but certainly hurts pretty bad. More so than a pulled muscle.

Thanks man I hope it's nothing too serious either.

Sounds like a decent strain/pull. If you’ve got a mini electric stim (or access to one) it can’t hurt.
Like a TENS unit or whatever? I used to have one. Worked pretty well for a pinched nerve in my back a few years back. Might have to grab another one.

Damn, tough break man. I’ve never had any chest issues on flat bench but it has certainly gave me shoulder problems. My front delts overpower my chest and feels the load more than my chest.

Anyway, just wanted to wish you luck and a speedy recovery!

You’re doing the smart thing getting into a Dr ASAP. Find out what’s wrong, if anything, and go from there to fix it.
Look at it as time to work on the lower body. Everyone’s favorite to hit is legs lol!

THE single best way I know to pull and tear something is doing high reps on a cold muscle to put a ton of blood in it. 20 rep warm ups are asking for it.

Knowledgeable people start with the bar. They don't do high reps early on as a warm up. This includes guys who hold world records in that lift.

Yeah it was pretty irresponsible. I was trying to get in and out of the gym cause the in-laws we're in town and my girl was pissed I left to go lift.

Went to the orthopedic today. Waiting on the order for the MRI. But from what he could feel he said the tendon that connects to the delt isn't contracting and he can feel that it's somewhat loose I guess? He said it's definitely not torn completely because you would visually see the muscle sag. He said he doesn't think it requires surgery and might just be a small tear in the tendon but the MRI will tell all. Looks like no gym for a while. I might do some more research on HGH healing properties.
