Is it wrong that I don't Allow People to work in with me?

So I gotta ask is it wrong that I don't allow people to work in with me? I also do not work in with others, I literally will ask someone how many sets and if they say 8 sets ill just do something else near by and wait for them to be done. So again Is it wrong that I dont allow people to work in with me?
Did someone ask you if they could work in, and you said "...No"?

i just dont see the big deal and apparently it is. Like I've literally waited 12 mins for a rack or a bench so im confused why its such a big deal that i dont allow others to work in when i dont expect them to allow me to work in

Don’t listen to these people. It’s no big deal. There’s no “rule”. Whomever is using the machine has dibs. I’ve never let anyone work in with me ever. It’s stupid. They can wait.

It's not a big deal to me. I'm just curious if you've actually had someone ask you to let them work in. I haven't. I've invited people to work in and sometimes they accept but more often than not they say no thanks. I've been invited to work in many times but I've never accepted the offer. I just go do something else until they're finished. I've never had anyone ask me if they could work in on the machine i was using, though. I'd definitely say yes if they asked me. I would feel like a dickbag if the only reason I said no was for my own comfort.

9/10 times i let people work in with me, as others have said, that's good gym etiquette.

The rare times i say no is when i have a shitload of plates and it's towards the end of my training where im simply too tired to unload and load 4 plates between each set. I just tell them i will be done in a bit and call them over to use the machine straight after me.

Lol, try that shit in a real gym and watch how fast you lose "dibs"

Asking if it's okay to work in is a courtesy, it's a retorical question.

If I come up to you in the gym and say "hey mind if I work in?" What that really means is "hey, when You're done your set, go play on your phone somewhere else, because I'm using this now"

Depends.

Machine sure, sure, just a pin switch and some adjustment in the seat.

Rack doing squats, a firm no except we are 2 plates difference. I ain't unloading 3+ plates every set, specially on dynamic effort day with 30" rests

I don't use machines btw

My basic thinking is 1 member 1 piece of equipment. I some one can work in without disrupting my sets then i have no reason not to. I am not that attached to any piece that i can't go a workout without it. There are always other options. No one has asked to work in with me in at least 20 years s o i really don't have much of an issue with working in. Now if some one thinks that giant setting on multiple pieces and claiming them all is another thing and they may find me sitting on one of those pieces by the time the get back. I tell them to talk to the manager as it is their house and they make the rule not me. And if some one thinks they can force me off a machine i will just let my private security i.e. police handle the situation and sit back and enjoy the show!

I would tell you no and you would walk away.

Really fortunate to have a home gym, for about 15 years though I did go to local gyms and when traveling I have used gyms all over the world. Never, have I had anything real dramatic happen in a gym. Cannot imagine not being able to incorporate a little social time into something I enjoy so much.

There have been times in my life that I have had troubles, concerns or problems, however the gym has been a place I escape from those things. I find time working out to be relaxing and I feel very calm when doing so.

Hardcore bodybuilding gyms have this as a part of the culture there. Any dickhead not letting somebody work in will find his membership short-lived.

All the faggy corporate gyms with folks playing on their phones and non-serious lifters have folks hogging the equipment and making everybody's workout take much longer than necessary. I notice the big guys even in those type of gyms work in with no problems.

The worst ones are the "circuit" fags who are doing like four different exercises on four different machines or benches and feel entitled to the exclusive use of all of them. LOL

who would of thought this was such a big topic. lol i only figured maybe 3 ppl would voice opinions but thanks for all the input i do appreciate it. So machines yes i will try this racks and benches no. this is what ive picked up from this conversation except some people feel the need to say yes everyone is entitled to work in. Which i would agree with this if people actually fucking hit consistent workouts and did focus on working sets and or even know what time under tension is. Just saying yes its a commercial gym and yes its mainly broccoli headed gym shark fuckers who dont actaully lift. but for hardcore lifters we have shared racks before where someone does squats and i do rack pulls or deads in front of them or vice versa. but I do appreciate all the Input from different views and different age groups. As well as different gym goers.

If I am on a bench, and you want to come work in, you are more than welcome. Same goes for the squat rack.

If we have to add weight for your sets from my wimpy set (or vice versa), then so be it. We'll both pitch in and do it.

On squats I am going to be two and a half to three minutes between sets, anyway. We could probably have another work in with the two of us, too, without bothering my rest time.

I remember this girl asking to work in with me on squats one time. I had seen her working out before and already knew she was strong. I half laughingly joked "just don't make me look bad." Nervous laugh.

She looked me dead in the eye, and said, "I hope not, since you're, you know, a guy." No laugh.

Yeah, I found something inside that day that made sure I was at least doing significantly more weight then her and cranking as many reps as possible . . . :p I ended up putting way more weight on the bar than I had planned at the beginning of the workout.

Dont forget that guy running on the treadmill and doing circuits in the gym at the same time, doing random machines inbetween his sprints.... that didnt last long lol
