IT band syndrome??

It had happened to me in the past a few times, that when I was squatting, I had a feeling that I can best describe as a tendon going over a bone, or grinding on a bone, in one or both knees.

It usually went away after a couple of weeks, so I thought it was some kind of inflammation of the tendon that healed on it’s own.

More recently, it began happening again, this time on both knees, and it doesn’t seem to go away.

I also have what seems to be a fluid filled lump on the outside of my right knee, that is more prominent when the knee is bent, but I’m not sure if it’s related.

After reading about IT band syndrome, I’m pretty sure that is what I have.

I have tried to foam roll it, but the pain is unbearable, and I would like to ask if any of you have had this, and how you treated it.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have any pain at all in your lower back/glute also?

I've had IT band issues in the past from running (its a bad habit of mine that I can't quit). Rest, ice, stretching, foam rolling all help. I also use a massage roller and one of those theraguns. All of these treatments hurt like hell.

Honestly tho. I always thought IT band issues as running/cycling injury due to the repetitive nature of those sports. Its interesting as I now read up that its also occurs in weight training.

In short, it hurts like hell to foam roll and stretch but you're going to have to do it. I'd also look on Amazon for "IT Band Strap". They run about 12-20 bucks. This will put pressure/compression on your IT band and should allow you to keep working out. It works for running, assume it will work here too.

Rolling your IT band is damn painful. Damn near throw up it hurts so bad. Lol.

Don't roll your IT band. It doesn't help. This works for me, usually in under a minute. He doesn't mention abs in this one, though. I had to increase my abs workouts to get it to go away long term.

When I was running 70-90+ mpw my IT bands would be tight as hell. I've read studies both for and against rolling IT bands directly. For me, I was rolling everything I could. Glutes, hamstrings, quads, calves, a few joints and yes my IT bands. It all hurt, and I was back to running.

While ITBS is VERY common in runners, cyclists, and soccer players IME its frequency in BB is quite LOW, primarily bc the "friction" created by repetitive knee flexion and extension are not a part of most BB regimen.

To that end symptoms, such as pain and swelling, that extend BELOW the lateral femoral condyle and involve the knee, are suggestive of KNEE pathology especially when squats are the precipitating event.

Might wanna have an orthopedic doc look things over if these symptoms fail to abate while squatting.

Thanks for your input, I was trying to do just that but I believe the clinics are still not taking patients here in Montreal.

Is it possible that you have patellar tracking? That's what it sounds like to me.
I feel my IT band going over the condyle when I bend my knees, the left one is worse, it even makes an audible noise that accompanies the crack when it slides over it.

It’s not painful, but it’s very bothersome, and I pretty much feel the IT band pulling on the knee insertion when I’m sitting with my legs bent.

There are many means of improving the symptoms of ITBS most being aimed at loosing the band laterally and strengething the adductors medially.

All that being said, most recover spontaneously by limiting or modifying those activities that exacerbate symptoms.
